Understand I'm a hard judge on culinary things, but it's still a cool cake and I'd almost be loathe to eat it when I'm done with the contest, what with all that work and everything.

Brilliant cake-mastery! I give it a 9.

Excellent! It's nice to see a good collection of photos this time around, since we only saw one of the last one. The bridge looks slightly crooked to me, but given that you're working with cake, I'm amazed it can stand as well as it does. Very interesting approach you took with the shield generators and cannons, and like last time, the frosting detail for the various panel lines, the engines, and the bridge windows are great. They clearly took a lot of effort.

Awesome work! Hope you didn't get too much of a mess when it BDZ'ed your fridge. :P And best of luck in the contest!

I say high marks for the comm equipment, particularly the central antenna. I would think icing would be difficult to 'bridge' like that; how did you build it up?

Impressive...most impressive. A 9 from me.

For Mark III, you should consider forgoing frosting for something like marzipan. Smooth surface, easily moldable. I understand it doesn't taste as good as frosting, but it's much better for making detailed show-cakes.

It tyook a while. the bridge was made and let harden while I built up the layers of the supports. Its was originally 3 pieces I then glued togather.

That might be because of the paste food coloring I use that lets me get a consistant color on the frosting.

Fondant is actually pretty easy to make if you get a little practice. The nice thing is that it tastes a little better than Marzipan and is pure white, which should make it more useful for decorating.

Something that I notice in these, and is a natural problem, is that because of the shape of the bridge, it's always going to sag from weight.

I wonder if perhaps you could 'cheat' and make a much lighter bridge that looks like the rest of the cake. Perhaps substituting thinks like gingerbread walls or Grammcrackers and sticking them together with icing and such.

I'd imagine they would weigh much less and once your 'cement' has set, perhaps retain shape better.

I agree but I only had time to make Royal icing. those antennas are version 3.0 actually.

Probably would. would actually be a bit more work. I can't show you but in the freezer the tower has leveled out more and looks a bit better. its tilted back because I didn't level the base well enough. Oh well. It is the best version I have done yet.
