Crazy Biblical Comic
I was perusing my HD looking for things I was willing to prune, and I located this gem and thought you all might get the same sort of bemused chuckle from it as I did.

I adore their claim that it's a verifiable fact. Funny they've never put forth the evidence for the skeptics, eh?

Intersting that the 250 cultures in question all have completely different flood stories. If there were only a handful of survivors you think they wouldn't have much trouble getting the story right.
When two opposite points of view are expressed with equal intensity, the truth does not necessarily lie exactly halfway between them. It is possible for one side to be simply wrong.

Actually, to put the lie to the last panel, the right radical is all one word -- yen3 -- which conveys some idea of the pronunciation of the entire character, chuan2. The meaning of the entire character itself comes from the left radical, which actually means "boat" and is derived from a pictograph of a dugout canoe. yen3 means "ravine". The pictographs in yen3 come from an abbreviation of water combined with the mouth radical, which in this context means a drainage ditch. Hardly an ark, no?
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

I find it sad that a relatively talented artist worked on this.
"The rest of the poem plays upon that pun. On the contrary, says Catullus, although my verses are soft (molliculi ac parum pudici in line 8, reversing the play on words), they can arouse even limp old men. Should Furius and Aurelius have any remaining doubts about Catullus' virility, he offers to fuck them anally and orally to prove otherwise." - Catullus 16, Wikipedia

I'm sick of this "boat with eight people" as well as other vast mutilation of Chinese characters. Shit like this shows up from time to time in Chinese speaking discussion boards. It's very infuriating to see people deny their own culture and history.
The book the comic cites is AFAIK the source of all this shit. CH Kang is a preacher and Ethel Nelson is a retired pathologist. Speaks alot on how good these claims are: they aren't.

What's really hilarious is that Dinosaurs died with their heads stretched up due to dehydration. That's right, the exact fucking opposite of a flood. Their neck ligaments contracted and pulled their heads into such a position due to lack of water.

What Surlethe said. As I'm learning Chinese now, It's very annoying to see those cretinist comics pop up and use people's general lack of knowledge about Chinese.
In fact, creationist comics are totally based on lack of knowledge and indocrination. They've been bashed with their "biology" thousand times a day, but it's even more appaling to see them venture into history or linguistics, making up stupid shit.

There are Chinese-speaking biblical creationists? Fuck no. I thought their intellectual capabilities would not allow them to have any knowledge in a subject like Chinese.Shit like this shows up from time to time in Chinese speaking discussion boards. I do have to agree that this guy's artwork and Dinos are amazing. I for one would convert if they had a scene where an Angel fights all these T. rexes and gets his ass eviscerated. Then the T. rexes destroy the boat and kick God's ass for ever threatening them with his pussy little flood.Plekhanov wrote:It would seem the bible I read in Sunday School was for some reason missing the exciting chapter in which fallen angels and 'viscious dinosaurs' attack the Ark only to be repelled by the 'Angel of the Lord' DBz style, which is a real shame as it would have really pepped up the story.

Europeans have been trying to export Christianity to China and the surrounding area for hundreds of years. They have met only limited success, but it's certainly more than zero.Stas Bush wrote:There are Chinese-speaking biblical creationists? Fuck no. True, sometimes I forget how old Christianity exactly is.
Nonetheless it's interesting that Christianity's "export" to Middle and Far East has ultimately failed in terms of scale, but European paganism has been totally wiped out by Christianity.

I would presume that part of this has to do with the fact that Christianity gained a foothold in the government of the later Roman Empire, which, in turn, allowed it to bring the weight of a nation down on the European pagans. In the east, however, Christianity has had no such luck, and is reduced to grassroots movements which, because of the sheer amount of people and the consequent weight of cultural inertia, spread much more slowly.Stas Bush wrote:Nonetheless it's interesting that Christianity's "export" to Middle and Far East has ultimately failed in terms of scale, but European paganism has been totally wiped out by Christianity.

The ability to speak Chinese doesn't mean one knows the history of each characters. I have basic Chinese education up to the undergraduate freshman level. Yet the best short refutation of this I could bring up is that they're analyzing a relatively modern and modified text (Kai Shu, not the PRC simplified text). Not quite strong. So I often rely on dictionaries explaining the old style characters to see how wild these claims go.
The reason for such wild claims is quite obvious. That Christianity is regarded as a "foreign religion". Also in the late Qing Dynasty preachers were often related with imperialism. And Buddhism, Taoism as well as folk religion have buried very deep in China. So some people think it's a good idea to make up shit saying that the Chinese "originally worshipped God".

ARG! There are no swimming dinosaurs! Or flying ones! There are groups of diapsids and archosaurs that swim and fly respectively, but none of them posses the seven hip vetebrae that almost every dinosaur does (and certainly every dinosaur's ancestor has them).Hawkwings wrote:where did all the swimming dinosaurs go then?

I'm totally with you. When I was a kid Greek and Norse myth were so much more interesting than Bible stories and as an added bonus, when the gods were being dicks there was no bullshit about them being all good and perfect.Plekhanov wrote:It would seem the bible I read in Sunday School was for some reason missing the exciting chapter in which fallen angels and 'viscious dinosaurs' attack the Ark only to be repelled by the 'Angel of the Lord' DBz style, which is a real shame as it would have really pepped up the story.

To play devil's advocate (angel's advocate?) for a moment, one could also claim that their heads were stretched upwards in order to keep their mouths above the water.wolveraptor wrote:What's really hilarious is that Dinosaurs died with their heads stretched up due to dehydration. It's still bullshit, I just thought I'd point that out.
Should any political party attempt to abolish social security, unemployment insurance, and eliminate labor laws and farm programs, you would not hear of that party again in our political history. There is a tiny splinter group, of course, that believes you can do these things... their number is negligible and they are stupid. --Dwight D. Eisenhower
The Greek and Norse myths are great this guys bible seems like a riot though I bet it has ninjas, pirates fighting angels and each other all kinds of cool stuff the regular bible misses out in it.Imperial Overlord wrote:I'm totally with you. As for me, I'm somewhere close to 1,000 hieros and next year I think I'll break the literacy mark and get up to 3000-4000. Hopefully.
It's disgusting for me to think that someone could actually learn some chinese writing and still spew out bullshit like that.
You said about discussion boards, so I meant "speaking" as "writing". Spoken Chinese doesn't require the knowledge of characters at all. However, knowledge of written Chinese requires knowing pictogram origins and rules of composition, otherwise it's hard to imagine people memorizing even the basic level of Chinese literacy (2000 hieros). The ability to speak Chinese doesn't mean one knows the history of each characters.

Actually, fossilization is helped by flash flooding and the quick deposition of sediments, but I was just pointing out how the real explanation is so diametrically opposed to the Biblical one. What disproves the flood, though, is not that piece of evidence, but the entire chunk of others.Discombobulated wrote:To play devil's advocate (angel's advocate?) for a moment, one could also claim that their heads were stretched upwards in order to keep their mouths above the water.

Let me paraphrase. What disproves the flood, though, is not that piece of evidence, but the entire chunk of others.
There's not a shred of evidence that proves the Flood.

It's more than that though: the only way a flood of that scale could actually occur would be through preternatural means. That effectively disproves it.
