Wll, there've been rumours and videos floating around the net for the last few weeks about this and EA/DICE have officially announced it as the next installment in the Battlefield series:
Redwood City, Calif. – March 22, 2006 – Fight an all-out war for survival in the year 2142. Electronic Arts (NASDAQ: ERTS) and Sweden-based developer, Digital Illusions, today announced development of the next installment in the award-winning Battlefield™ franchise, Battlefield 2142™. The ground-breaking first-person shooter is scheduled to ship this fall for the PC.
The year is 2142, and the dawn of a new Ice age has thrown the world into a panic. The math is simple and brutal: The soil not covered by ice can only feed a fraction of the Earth’s population. Some will live, most will die. In Battlefield 2142, players will choose to fight for one of two military superpowers in an epic battle for survival, the European Union or the newly formed Pan Asian Coalition. Armed with a devastating arsenal of hi-tech assault rifles, cloaking devices and sentry guns, players will also do battle using some of the most imposing vehicles known to man. Massive battle Mechs wage fierce combat on the ground, while futuristic aircraft rule the skies. When facing one of these new behemoths, players will need to use their wits and an arsenal of new countermeasures like EMP grenades to level the playing field.
"Battlefield has long been synonymous with innovative, best-of-breed online multiplayer action," said Sean Decker, Executive Producer, DICE. "By stepping into the future with Battlefield 2142, the team at DICE has reinvented the rules of engagement for the next century.”
Team play features allow up to 64 players to enter the action on the front lines as part of a formal squad, or work behind the scenes in Commander Mode to direct the strategic assaults of their teammates. With in-game success, players increase their rank and unlock awards, including new weapons, medals and more, delivering the most comprehensive and flexible persistence in the Battlefield universe to date. This might end up being pretty cool, but there are so many ways it can go horribly wrong........
And this is why you don't watch anything produced by Ronald D. Moore after he had his brain surgically removed and replaced with a bag of elephant semen.-Gramzamber, on why Caprica sucks
I wonder if they can apply realistic/componant damage to vehicles and such? It'd be so wonderful to peg some mech jockey's leg with a tank round, then roll up and sodomize him a bit with the barrel as he's paralised before finishing him off.
This has been another blunder by you friendly local idiot.
This is EA and DICE we're talking about here. It will probably be half baked and kicked out the door early, given the previous BF title history. Quake Wars and UT2k7 are going to kick its ass.
Given the sheer amount of bugs in BF2, patches that did more harm than good, and complete general incompetency regarding the entire game, I don't hold much hope for this. And with Quake Wars...well, that hope withers away to nothing.

What's with all the complaints about bugs and such? The only problems I've enountered so far is the occasional tendancy for lag, which occurs in all XBOX Live games (in fact, for me, BF2 seems to do substantially better).

For example, patch 1.2 for the PC version of BF2 and SF had some bugs that came along with it. Anti-tank rockets had a chance that they would simply clip through the target, the red name bug was still there, and apparently on Special Forces, getting into a TOW mount on a humvee would crash the server.
The soldiers and vehicles look cool. But still, too early to say. I'd like to see how the game mechanics/dynamics works with futuristic toys, or whether it's just an update with news mods/skins.
Well those Mecha look like anti-infantry platforms rather then heavy weapons platforms.

My PC Gamer preview says that the rocket launchers on top are for anti-tank AND anti-work. Basically its your standard kill everything wank-mech. Its only disadvantages are speed and extreme sensitivity to EMP grenades.

And lets not forget the infamous "Red Team" bug that took them forever and day to fix. I swear that bug was responsible for half my teamkills.

Why not do a 1943? Yeah, it'd be WW2 all over again, but at least maybe this time the infantry combat wouldn't suck so bad.
I think they should make a Battlefield 1915, personally. I mean really, who wouldn't want to spend hours sitting in muddy, disease-filled trenches, and then cue up and charge enmass across open ground into a line of machine guns right at the end of the game? It'd have mustard gas and everything!
I couldn't care less about 2142 at the moment. I want to see more BF2. Where's the Western urban battles? Alpine? Hopefully the armor booster will add some Gulf War-esque open desert armored battles, and hopefully OH-58D Kiowa Warriors and A-10 Warthogs... but that still leaves out things like ZSU Shilkas, F-22 Raptors, and a whole boatload of stuff that should be no-brainers. DICE is burning through their accumulated BF1942 goodwill like it's napalm, methinks.

Meaning the mecha is the strongest land unit in the game? I would like some semblance of realism.

Battlefield 1918 could actually be pretty cool, you’d have a fine range of armored vehicles and aircraft (GO ZEPPLINES!) and a pretty wide range of infantry weapons plus a time period which actually saw some mobile fighting on the western front.

Clearly, Battlefield 1862 would be the superior option.
