Oblivion Sidequests [SPOILERS]

Post by GuppyShark »

Thought I'd make a thread for talking about the various sidequests we've run through.

Hackdirt
There's a town south of Chorrol called Hackdirt. It's the source of the 'start a fight in a church, guy runs home to get his sword and raise a posse' story.

I couldn't figure out how this area was supposed to work. You talk to the locals and they're all "We don't serve your kind, outsider." "The Brethren will deal with you if you don't STFU."

I found the Brethren's underground lair and cleared it out. That, coupled with reading the book on the altar in their church led my character (Crusader) to only one conclusion - the town must be destroyed, before any more innocents are slain.

So I went around with my sword drawn harassing the locals. They had a midnight mass in their church that didn't seem to amount to much, then they all left. Except one, whom I promptly slew. Turns out they all went into the underground base. There, they all attacked me, and I cut them all down.

Problem was, at no point had I attacked anyone who had not threatened me (if you piss an NPC off enough, he'll draw on you) first or taken anything that was marked red (illegal to take). But when I reached the next town, the guards accosted me for stealing 112 items and assaulting 8 people. :P

200 gold, it cost to remove that stain upon my honour. But it was worth the cost to maintain peace and order.

Oblivion Portal
On my way to Imperial City after being inducted into the Blades, I came across an Oblivion Portal at a fork in the road. I charged right into it, killed a whole pile of Doom Imps but I couldn't get through any of the War Gates. :(

Some of the buildings have levers inside to open the Gates.

One of my faves:

A Brush With Death
A painter has dissapeared from a locked room! Where could he be? After agreeing to help search for him, I go inside the room to look for clues... hmm, that painting is nice... WHOA! I go inside the painting, and find the painter! Turns out he has a magic paintbrush that allows him to paint things inside the canvas, hence why he's so good at detail. Only, a thief entered the room and entered the painting too, and painted some trolls to scare off the painter. Too bad the trolls killed him. I have to kill the trolls and get the brush back, or we're both stuck here!

Everything but the painter and I look painted, and what's do I get to coat my blade with to take on those Painted Trolls? Turpentine. Oh yeah.

Spoilers:

Re: Hackdirt
There's a sidequest involving that town where you save a young female Argonian who the cult are planning to sacrifice. I killed everyone in the village save two of them. One of the villagers helps you out.

Another sidequest I enjoyed is where you work "undercover" for the Anvil city guard, to bust some thieves that seduce men to come to their farmhouse and then rob them. I had to slay three lovely ladies though, so that was a bummer.

Oh yeah...I am also the Arena Grand Champion. If you go to Crowhaven and find out the Gray Prince's Origin, the final fight is really easy...

Thanks for the info Quorthon. Strange that one of the villagers would help you out when they all tried to go me. I guess that's what happens when you run into the hero before you've repented your evil ways. :)

I just escorted the Fighter's Guild Master's son through a cave looking for a missing guild member. He proceeded to get smacked around by trolls and ogres. He cannot die, though, only be knocked out. So during a particularly vicious fight, I knocked him down, just because the spoiled brat couldn't handle the mission on his own. And twice now I've had to complete someone else's contract because he defaulted and wouldn't do the job. Boy, the fighter's guild sure does involve a lot of cleaning up other's messes.

My first Mage's Guild quest was a walk in the park...literally. I didn't even have to fight anyone or anything to complete it.

Re:Hackdirt.
Yeah, that does seem odd that a villager would help you. What happens is that you go there and ask about the missing girl, and get rebuffed. But one villager says he's tired of the killing and tells you to enter the caverns and save the girl, but all hell breaks loose.

The Dark Brotherhood is so full of incredibly sadistic fun and dark humor. I highly reccomend it to all those lacking moral fiber.

I've been steering clear of the Thieve's Guild and Dark Brotherhood because of the "telepathic guards". Although the Brotherhood has been to see me. This is because I did the Crowhaven sidequest for The Gray Prince, the former grand champion of the Arena. He sends you out to bring back proof of his noble birth, but you discover that he's actually the son of a vampire. He gets all despondent, and when you challenge him to fight in the arena, he just stands there and lets you kill him, begging you to end his misery. For some reason, this counted as a murder and the Dark Brotherhood came to see me.

By the way, does anyone know if there's a resolution to the thieves guild quest? I joined the guild, but frankly I don't think it'll be much fun because of the "telepathic guards" and I want to report what I know, but none of the city guards seem too interested in what I say. I've heard of this Hieronymous Lex (sp?) fellow, but I can't seem to find him.

Stealing is actually really, really easy. Sure, if you get seen, everyone everywhere magically knows (even if the guy that saw you bites it seconds afterward) but if you're good at sneaking nobody will ever know, and you can rip off whole towns. Don't be afraid of joining the thieves guild.

Or the Dark Brotherhood.

Half the contracts are in places where guards aren't. The other half, you should be able to pull off without alerting anyone anyways. If you're good enough to please Sithis, that is.

Anyone found anything actually worth stealing (that is, something better than the crap standard on every random bandit in the world)?

No. Mainly due to the super-lame scaling, I find stuff more either in mission dudes or bandits than stealing. Everyone has the same shears and the same tan mugs. :)

I've found a *ton* of good stuff. particularly in shops and higher end homes. (the count's quarters are usually good too) I operate in two ways, either in daylight or during the night. At night, shopkeepers lock up their shop and go home, ofcourse, if you happen to have their key that you pickpocketed from them, or are good at lockpicking....

Then turn all that stuff in at your fence.

oh btw, where is that painting quest? that sounds awesome.

I really haven't done any sidequests, just the Dark Brotherhood ones. So far I've just been feeding on hapless humans and commiting random midnight murders. I love vampirisim.

I've spent a good bit of my session today doing the Daedra quests (you can get from the shrines you find out in the wilderness). Azura's Star and Skeleton Key are probably the two best items in game! And the quests' storylines are entertaining as hell.

I gave my Azura's Star to Martin, because I couldn't find any other Good Daedra shrines. :? And the not-totally-Bad Daedra I did find had quests that were difficult for my character. Not to mention annoying offering requirements. *cough*Sheogorath*cough*

I'm having trouble finding the shrines, and I need to find one that has an item I don't like... so I can give it up for another quest. :?

I gotten the location of several shrines from random people I come across. I think it was a response to rumors, after I found the first one (Azure's, the location to which was a in a book in Cloud Top Fortress). Azure's star is basically my main "battery" for my enchanted weapons (since they longer recharge over time, which hopefully a mod will fix).

I actually like that they don't recharge over time. But many people seem to think mana regen is too slow, when it's way, way higher than in any earlier games. I can use finger of the mountain almost constantly.

Ok the Madstone quest (you get in Bruma, I think its a lvl 15+ quest) absolutely kicks ass! Its a nice, long quest with a metric shitload of loot.

Anyone know what the fuck I'm supposed to do at the Dark Fissure? Its a mages guild quest, I'm supposed to be pwnzoring necromancers (or something)... so I get to the altar, there's the light from the sky... and... nothing. Nobody there, no quest update. There's a cave full of necromancers - most of which I killed - and no quest update.
