Scandisk found errors on my FlashDrive

Post by Dave »

I've got a somewhat well used flash drive that Scandisk just found errors on (SanDisk Cruzer Micro.) I've had it about 2 years and loved it, even though it's 128 MB. Scandisk said it fixed all the errors, but the incident reminded me of how old the drive is and how much I use it (and somewhat rely on it.)

It did go through the wash recently (though I suspect it has happened before). Do I have much more life in it? If not, what brands and/or sizes do you recommend? Would I be justified in hanging on to it even after I got a new one?

Going through the wash won't drastically affect a flash drive (as I've done that to mine before) but I've found two years or so to be the 'upper limit' on a well-used flashdrive. At least the last one I had, which was a 256 megabyte, very well used SanDisk Cruzer Mini. If you want more storage, I'd recommend upgrading to a 512MB one. The one I've got right now is 1GB, and personally it's fantastic.

Although it really depends on your price range and how much space you actually need or want. Most 1GB SanDisks and lower can be found on NewEgg for $60.00 or less.

You're probably on your way to hitting the write limit in a few of these places. Soon enough the bad sectors will not be able to be fixed, and you'll have to find a new drive.
