Gravity doesn't have a discreet border. The Enterprise's shields do. If the shields were gravitational, the beam would gradually disperse according to the inverse-square law. Gravity fields
Well I not expecting the gravity field to have a define boundary region unless thru their trekkie science they can alter the field in matter that is beyond the norm.
One would expect the sharp boundary shown is the result of warping time space in an unusual manner. One example of this is theorical object called Cosmic string. ultra dense mass with a small diameter in a light year long string.
If it move is a single direction it actually cut a wedge out of time space in the direction of travel. It can warp spacetime in unusual configuration ( in some case create solution to Einstein equation that would allow time travel)
The problem is that all matter and energy is effected in the same manner, there is no frequency or energy depend parameter to it.
Energy dependent barrier are not unheard of, look at binding energy of Ur nucleus, only a nucleon of a specif energy can leave or enter. But only high energy one can, low energy ones are deflected, the shield on the Enterprise work in reverse.
Low energy photons can get thru the barrier, if they are in a Laser beam they can be block, how is this done, how does the field do this. And what is this frequency thing? do they mean the frequency of the photon. Is the field oscillating at a specific frequenc?
