Decent DVD burning software?

Post by Faqa »

Having FINALLY gotten around to buying and installing a DVD drive(uh.... yay?), I find the included programs for burning to DVD are utter shit.

Anyone got a recommendation? I need to be able to burn video and data files without waiting for the second coming......

If the video is already in the DVD format (Meaning that the files are named something like "VIDEO_TS.VOB") then Nero is perfect.

If you need to MAKE video files into the correct format, I suggest using DVD-lab for DVD authoring.

I use Nero for everything from authoring to burning to image management. With all of the extra components et al, it can handle all kinds of tasks. Except defeating on-disc copy protection and DVD decryption, for obvious reasons.

How about a good program for ripping video off DVD? For some reason, it seems like all the free software out there is only for Mac OSes.

I've had a couple of discs that DVD Shrink couldn't crack, but DVD Decrypter was able to do the job.

As far as general burning software goes, I'll add my voice to the chorus for Nero 6.

Also, look for Japanese made media when you buy single layer discs and Verbatims made in Singapore if you ever need dual layer discs.
You can get good Taiwanese SL discs like some Riteks, but it's a crapshoot since you don't know who the actual manufacturer of the disc is until you pop it in the drive and run a check.

Nero 6 for the win when it comes to general DVD authoring and burning.

Want to back up your DVD movies, DVD Shrink is the way to go for 90% of the movies out there, with DVD Decryptor able to finish off the other 10%.

Alcohol 120% and Roxio are my top choices. Nero is good for data discs & basic stuff, but if you want anything else you need something better

Nero 6 it is then, I suppose. Now to find a copy of it.....

Thanks, guys.

I prefer Blindwrite for those pesky disks (since I find alcohol a cunt to use)... but I haven't run into a proper copy-protected disk in ages. Since I image and crack everything, I only need the image to perform an install.

There are a lot of DVD drives out there that come with hardware limited copies of Nero 6 (i.e. the software only works with the drive it came with, it's tied to the serial number). I've got one of those, and the store I work in right now also sells them. You can file that for future reference, as right now it seems too late for you.

I was much dismayed when Fujifilm switched their supplier to one of the cheap Taiwanese firms.

Unencrypted vob files, in the original format.

Use DVD2AVI to convert it to any kinmd of Avi you have a codec for.

I'm a bit partial to Auto Gordian Knot myself. It is extremely simple to use, practically one click once you tell it what audio and video streams to use and how big to make the file (there are more options if you want them). It takes the IFOs output by DVD decrypter (among other things). However, it only support DiVX and XViD (which is fine because I like XViD, it is has great quality and is completely free).

Funny, theres a demo right off of their website. (www.nero.com) You just can't burn anything.
