Pics of the DMZ in Korea (56k DIE!)

Post by MKSheppard »

By 2A373 on www.ar15.com:
Here are some pictures I took March 24th when I got to tour the DMZ.

------------------

The huge flag (30 meters long) that is flown over the NK Propaganda Village.

Image

View of Conferance Row. The light blue buildings are controlled by the South and the gray ones by the North.

Image
Image

ROK Army Guards - you don't mess with these guys!

The concrete strip is the border. Picture was taking from the north side of the border.

Image

ROK Army Guards keeping watch on the North.

Image

North Korean Guards watching us.

View from CP 5 of CP 4 and the scene of the Panmunjom Axe Murder Incident.

Image

All these are pictures of the North taken from CP 5. Notice the lack of trees once past the DMZ border, this is because they have all been cut down and used for heat.

The large tower in this picture is one of many that the North uses to jam radio and TV signals coming from the South.

Most interesting.

I've never heard of the "axe murder" incident. What happened?

Isn't that where soldiers were cutting down a tree the NK's thought was holy, and they gunned them down?

I would guess that they chopped down the trees not to provide heat, but to ensure clear lines of fire. Ok, that's 'providing heat' in a way. :D

What's with the guy staring at the wall? Doesn't seem a very efficient way of keeping an eye out for. . . well . . .anything. And at first I thought he was a mannequin or something. :?

POWs had the choice to cross the bridge back to North/South Korea or to stay where they were. Once you did cross, however, you weren't allowed back.

It's a bridge leading to North Korea. You were expecting maybe "Bridge of Freedom"? :P

Getting major

vibes from some of those pics.

The guards "staring at walls" I'm thinking are using them for ~60% cover while staring at NK buildings.

ROK guards stand halfway hidden behind the building so that if they get shot they can presumeably fall over behind the building and not die.

And Shepp is in SK? Let me know if you need a tour or something. Just to tempt you I have friends high up in the military :P

Shep's post was a re-post of an other message at the link stated at the top of his thread.

Hell, he was in D.C. yesterday taking snaps of the rally - not even Shep in an SR-71 is that fast! ;)

No, they stand like that so they can keep track of the Norks visually,
while keeping half of their body protected from gunfire, etc.
