Very stupid question about isd's

Post by AL »

is it possible these massive ships could land and deploy their troops in a similary manner to that of the acclamater?

This would explain why we dont see any drop ships or landing barges.

or maybe this is way out there.

and could they hold more troops than the 9,700 when the smaller acclamator held some 16,000 troops?

if my spelling is off please forgive, its late and i'm tired.

firstly,no they don't land, they have small shuttles which carry men or vehicles down to the planet surface.
Secondly, the reason ISD's have less troops is becuase accalimnators were transports & isd's carry ties, shuttles, supplies (last 6 years!),vehicles etc

Hmm although canon doesn't contradict it, I doubt it.
They are said to have landing barges for the deployment of the armored forces, the fact we haven't seen them doesn't mean they don't exist.
The Acclamator, though it's sharing some design features with the later VSDs and ISDs, actually is a formidably self-defended transport.
It's main purpose is delivery of troops, not direct space-combat, although he might be capable of punching through a blockade to deliver the troops.
Star Destroyer's main purpose, on the other hand, is ship-to-ship combat, deployment of ground forces is secondary.

The only star destroyer type vessles that can operate within atmosphere as far as I know are the Victory Class which replaced the Acclamators and were replaced themselves by the Imperator 1's and 2's currently being used and also, Ysanne Isard's custom Super Star Destroyer the Lusankya which took off from Coruscant.

The need for a ship such as a Star Destroyer to go into an atmosphere is not necessary as its objectives and operations when dealing with planets can all be acomplished from orbit and if they need to conduct an invasion, they have smaller, faster and more efficient ships to do the job.

The Lusankya actually was a pretty normal Executor class, but had big repulsorlift units attached to it which made the takeoff possible. That shows us that in theory, an ISD or even an SSD can enter planetary surface and even land, but needs special equipment to start again.
Oh and btw the VicStars weren't completely replaced by the ImpStars, they were replaced at the task of space combat, but they have the advantadge that they can enter planetary atmosphere and serve as support for ground troops.

I brought up an argument like this up a while back. Anyway, an ISD is for orbital ardments and such, and the Stormtroopers are supposed to be something like a first wave of troops, and transports bring in the rest.

No, ISD's cannot land on planets. They employ drop ships and shuttles for sending troops down to the surface of a planet.

Some (or, perhaps, all) Victory class Star Destroyers are capable of atmospheric flight.

I think we're about done here. If you want to discuss this more, take it to the Official SD thread or one of the 4 other threads about Imperial ships.
