The last Nimitz class Carrier ever built will be called the.....

The Navy named a new aircraft carrier Monday for former President Bush.

The current president's father, who created the international coalition that defeated Iraq and liberated Kuwait in the 1991 Persian Gulf War, said at a Pentagon ceremony he was "overwhelmed by this and very grateful."

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said the president was "honored that his father was honored."

"This ship will provide a worldwide, deployable symbol of our nation's resolve and the character of President George Herbert Walker Bush," said Navy Secretary Gordon England.

The former president was a Navy torpedo bomber pilot during World War II and at 18 became the youngest decorated bomber pilot in that war. He flew 58 combat missions and was shot down in September 1944 near Chichi Jima.

"I don't believe in the hero stuff," Bush said. "How'd I get to be a hero? They knocked my plane out of the sky."

The USS George H.W. Bush is under construction at Northrop Grumman's Newport News shipyard in Virginia. Completion of the massive nuclear-powered vessel is scheduled for 2009.

The ship will be the last of 10 Nimitz-class carriers, which cost about $4.5 billion each. The ninth, scheduled to be commissioned in May, is the USS Ronald Reagan.

When finished, the carrier will be 1,092 feet long, weigh 97,000 tons and have 4.5 acres of deck space for about 75 aircraft. Nimitz-class ships have crews of about 6,000.

Another Nimitz-class carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, is currently in the Persian Gulf, where its planes are helping patrol the southern flight-interdiction zone over Iraq.

Should have been Lexington as planned. I'd like to shoot whatever congressman or admiral started the campaign to name them for senators and bitch slap the one whose behind the whole president thing.

Lexington would have been a great name, especially since the replacement version from WWII hasn't been in service for awhile (it was the training carrier in Pensacola, Fl. for awhile).

I hope that doesn't mean the next one will be CVN 79 - USS William Jefferson Clinton

The USN will likely pull a Carter with that one, name something that will never make the news and be generally hidden from site after him.

The Ticonderoga is the first ship in a cruiser class.

I think the Hornet is the same class Amphimb carrier as the Wasp (another WWII carrier name). I don't know if any other's have been used.

Yeah, there were a lot of people who wanted to name a carrier after Rickover but he'd pissed so many people off that I think they named a Los Angeles class attack sub after him instead.

Why? Can't you have the Constitution and the Constitution II? Or would the orginial Constitution have to lose it's flagship status?

Because you'd need to rename it, at least on paper. They did that once in the 1930's and it does indeed require the stripping of it's proper name.

About the flagship status, I don't know. Probably not if they want to.

I think Reagen and Bush are okay and deserve ships, but I find it odd that they do it before they're dead (the usual tradition).

And the Winston Churchill is a nice touch. It's been said that he is more popular among Americans than among Britons...What class DDG is that Churchill, anyway? I'm a grunt; I'm not all 100% on my seagoing platforms.

As for the Constitution, it is called a Frigate but in actuality it is more of a heavy cruiser (guns, displacement). They've toyed around with the types and classes of ships over the years. It wouldn't be right to name a 'torpedo-bait' frigate after that ship; an Aegis cruiser would be more appro pos.

Reagan and Bush sure as hell did NOT earn the title. Hornet, Yorktown, and Ranger deserve to be carriers again before Reagan and Bush.
