Those two ships are from the Avenger-class, which strangely has some of the coolest ship names in the US Navy.

The US navy has a committee of around a dozen people who sit around and name ships; of course others influence them rather massively. Things like carriers get debated over heavily, but for minor craft they essentially have a free had and a big list of every named and numbered vessel in the navy.

Minesweepers don't cost much or get in the so no one cares. The cool names are the result.

Actually that is a reference to the first Hot Shots movie. They were on board the USS Esses.

I've seen the Avenger. Looks like a glorified tugboat to me. I guess they do their job though.

Yes, but its obvious where the inspiration came from.

They need a new Essex. That was the class of carrier that carried the war across the Pacific (well, that and the escort carriers). Here's what I know of still-existing non-commissioned American aircraft carriers (feel free to add on if I miss one):

USS Lexington ("The Blue Ghost") CV-16. Corpus Christi, Texas.
USS Hornet CV-12. Alameda Point, California.
USS Intrepid CV-11. New York, New York.
USS Yorktown CV-10. Patriot's Point, South Carolina.
USS Midway CVB-41. San Diego, California.
USS Forrestal CVB-59. Newport, Rhode Island (hulked, not currently visitable).
USS Oriskany CV-34. Beaumont, Texas (not sure about condition).
USS Ranger CV-61. Bremerton, Washington (preservation fundraising underway).

There's currently a USS Essex LHD-2. It's not the same as a fleet carrier but they're pretty cool ships. I've seen a couple in person when they were new.

The class itself currently utilizes quite a few of the names of carriers that were in WWII.

LHD-1 USS WASP
LHD-2 USS ESSEX
LHD-3 USS KEARSARGE
LHD-4 USS BOXER
LHD-5 USS BATAAN
LHD-6 USS BONHOMME RICHARD
LHD-7 USS IWO JIMA

As a (slightly off-topic) side note, Kearsarge was also the name of the only American battleship not named after a state (Kearsarge BB5). Some people try to dispute this by bringing up the USS Guam, which was a battlecruiser (CB2).

Another good site is here.

Don't you interrupt us! We're setting up the final pieces of
our great wargame, a massive 50,000 hex monster with
4,000 INDIVIDUAL pieces tracking Army Group Center
during Operation Bagration!

It should take us only a WEEK to play the first turn...

Or we could just play this game instead:

USS Hornet CV-12. Alameda Point, California.
This one is getting better as the years go by. Its been open for tour for about 3-5 years now. You can walk to the aft of the flight deck and get a beautiful view of San Francisco. Also, you can see the lagoon where China Clippers used to take off from on their trips to the East. I cant help but think of Indiana Jones. :)

Fun Fun! But 4,000 pieces? That's what, company level? How the fuck am I supposed to properly conduct the battle when I can't deploy my individual tanks and rifle sections for optimum effectiveness?

"No actually. During the 1980's it was possibul for the Russians to win, if they could divide or destroy NATO and force economic concessions out of it. The massive military buildup and all out political and economic attack made that impossible and sped things along. It was hardly the forgone conclusion you claim."

I am not one of those who bashes everything that does not have the american flag painted on it.But quite frankly I doubt.By the 80's their economy was stagnating. All that they could have managed was lasting a bit more than they did historically. And I suppose that if they had never lauched their assault before Reagan became president they must have had some good reasons.

Ah. I haven't had a chance to visit the Hornet. I've been on Yorktown (the Fighting Lady) twice (almost got blown off the flight deck by high winds the first time, when I was about 6), the battleship Alabama once, and the armored cruiser Olympia three times. I've also been on the other ships at Patriot's Point, the destroyer Laffey (the ship that would not die), the cutter Ingham, and the submarine Clamagore.

Any chance the US would name a ship something like Yamato?

Not while any WWII vets are alive. The ruckus they'd raise would be so loud you'd hear people from Hawaii all the way in Maine. Especially when one of the Hawaiian senators fought in the war.

doubtful, but personally i do think it would in some ways be ironically fitting given the history.

There isn't a Farragut in the USN anymore; seems strange, given that it's a traditional destroyer name (including what was probably the first US destroyer) coupled with the many Burkes building.
