RoTJ "What If?"

Post by Darth Fanboy »

(I have always despised "RAR!")

What if instead of simply offering Luke power beyond his dreams and a place at his side, Palpatine made Luke the following offer, upon learning that the Death Star is activated and that the Rebellion is almost certainly doomed (even though it wasn't), The Emperor offers Luke the chance to save his friends in exchange for him undergoing Sith tutelage. Sensing no dishonest intent from the Emperor, Would Luke take the risk? In exchange for Luke Palpatine would allow the entire Rebel Fleet, including Leia, Han and all the other soldiers on the forest moon to depart safely. They would even be allowed to keep their ships and military equipment , maybe save for those who try anything brash on the way out of the system.

Do you think Luke would have turned to the Dark Side in that situation? If Palpatine manipulated Luke's loyalty as he did to Anakin? Or would Luke still decline despite Palpatine's genuine word. (The Battle of Endor is still fought and won by the Rebels with no differences.)

It would entirely depend on another what if.
Specifically the commander of the shield generator base not falling for the most obvious deception in the galaxy and staying shut up tight.

With the Death Star's safety guaranteed and if Palpatine did make this offer I believe Luke would accept while trying to maintain his good side though this Sith indoctrination.

Excellent point. Assume that this occurs prior to Chewie getting in the AT-ST, and that the Emperor is able to order his soldiers to hole up before the ill advised pursuit.

I dont think he would have. After seeing the emperor destroy the rebel ships (I think it was a medical frigate and a Mon Cal Cruiser) to show that it was operational, I believe that he would have known that he would end up as evil as the emperor.

However there is another thing to consider. What if the emperor offered to let Vader go along with all of that? Would Luke turn then?

It could be Luke does take the offer ala DE and tries to destroy the Empire from within. Luke would have to feel that was the only way to save the Rebellion.

it would be important to know Vader's reaction to the situaton. Luke's reason for being there and betting pretty much the entire future of the galaxy was his belief that he could get his father back.He felt that once he accomplished this everything would start working out better (which it did, but it was still a hell of a risk)

I can see Luke accepting his offer only to save his friends. It has been shown that he holds them more dearly than Yoda's teachings and Obi-Wan's advice. If his friends were out of the equation, he would certainly flat-out refuse.

Hmm, I've heard before that in an early version of RotJ Luke actually did accept Palpatine's offer, but Lucas changed it because he thought it'd be too dark an ending.

It really depends on what happens at Endor. If Han Solo & co take out the shield generator anyway ("so he's evil - ok, carry on"), the Death Star would still have been destroyed. Would the Emperor, Vader and Luke have been able to get off in time? Probably, although they'd then risk being attacked by the Rebel Alliance.

I Like could drag an almost comatose Vader off the DS before it explodes I'm sure all three could escape quite easily in the time provided.

lol there's a fleet of Star Destroyers there with captains who see the Emperors shuttle flee the DS or pick up it's requests for assistance. Do you think those captains are going to let anyone hurt a hair on the Emperors head? I certainly wouldn't. Hell It'd be a race to see who could get between the shuttle and the rebels the fastest. The Emperor is not as forgiving as Darth Vader :D

Probably (all depends on exactly who's where, so it's probably impossible to answer: if the Millennium Falcon a few thousand klicks from the shuttle they're in trouble, if it's a Star Destroyer they're (probably, assuming the captain doesn't think "screw it, kill those egotists") safe.

But it would be amusing to see the Emperor convert Luke only to get vaporised by the Death Star exploding / Rebel fleet :D .
