Good, free webhosts?
Well, maybe not so much a webhost, but a place where one can make a website. I've heard iffy things about Tripod and such places, so any recommendations of places that are good, free and fairly intuitive?

Google page creator is very easy to use, but I'm not sure it allows a lot of customization (at least, I haven't tried any modification apart from Google's own interface - theoretically you should be able to add your own HTML)
Freewebs might be another option, at least they were useable a few years ago.

Maybe he wants to make a real webpage. Also, services like Imageshack can't do dynamic images AFAIK.Uraniun235 wrote:With the advent of services like Imageshack, using free webhosting for images is a thing of the past.

I've had trouble uploading HTML files, and adding HTML to the existing pages. If I ever get either to work right I'll let you know.Bounty wrote:Google page creator is very easy to use, but I'm not sure it allows a lot of customization (at least, I haven't tried any modification apart from Google's own interface - theoretically you should be able to add your own HTML)

I fiddled with Google's page creator for a bit, and it seems less flexible than even Geoshitties. I'm not even sure you can change the background beyond its default templates.Bounty wrote:Google page creator is very easy to use, but I'm not sure it allows a lot of customization (at least, I haven't tried any modification apart from Google's own interface - theoretically you should be able to add your own HTML)

True. To be honest, I don't see why people are so reluctant to get paid webhosts. I've seen paid webhosts for as little as $5 per month. Granted, they're not the greatest webhosts, but they would get the job done.Beowulf wrote:At that point, you'll normally want a real webhost, not a free one.Darth Wong wrote:Maybe he wants to make a real webpage. If you are planning on any kind of serious website, paid hosts are the way to go.
If it is just some small thing to dick around with, I would recommend either: your ISP's hosting, or finding a friend who has a server and will give you space.
The other real option is to turn an old PC into a webserver and point a service like DynDNS to your home's IP Address. Assuming that your ISP doesn't block Port 80(a lot do).

You're both right. I do want something for an actual webpage and a paid service would be better, however the person who wants me to do this doesn't want to pay (at the moment) and wants it right this minute (actually, he wanted it done today).Beowulf wrote:At that point, you'll normally want a real webhost, not a free one.Darth Wong wrote:Maybe he wants to make a real webpage. Thanks for the suggestions.
EDIT: Sorry, meant to respond to this, too.
Yeah, I mentioned this to him, as well. I told him we could buy a cheap computer and use something like DynDNS for hosting but he shot it down. Same issue of time and all that.If it is just some small thing to dick around with, I would recommend either: your ISP's hosting, or finding a friend who has a server and will give you space.

Okay, convinced him of the paid webhost route. So, does anyone have any recommendations for paid webhosts?
EDIT: I ask because I have no fucking clue what to look for.

Unfortunately it seems that http://www.illfuckinghostit.com is down. They had a free service with server side scripting running for a while.
Of course there are some issues with having http://spyder.illfuckinghostit.com on a business card.

Not by using the page creator, it seems. But you can upload pages. I did a quick test: Here.General Zod wrote:I fiddled with Google's page creator for a bit, and it seems less flexible than even Geoshitties. I'm not even sure you can change the background beyond its default templates.
Seems like it's not possible to create directories, though. Even Geocities can do that. I seem to recall that you can directly edit html-files there, too...

1&1 Hosting. I see them advertised in Computer Shopper quite a bit and their rates seem fairly reasonable. Not used them myself though.Erik von Nein wrote:Okay, convinced him of the paid webhost route. So, does anyone have any recommendations for paid webhosts?
