"Affirmative Raven's Claws. We'll dispatch a shuttle then take position wherever is most convenient."

The Other Guy shaped its vector to match that of Raven's Claws, and awaited further instruction.

"Recommend geosynchronous orbit on this side of the planet. Combat exercises are underway on the far side, and there is a small but existant chance of weapons fire."

The Raven's Claws began descending to the planet once the shuttle came forth, escorting it towards the massive Stargate, literally built into the side of a mountain.

The Other Guy

"Do we have any idea what they don't want us to see?" Chief Navigator Helmsley wanted to know, as she watched the shuttle descend.

"Do we care? Its not like we have any intention of starting anything with them. They could have just said hold your position or we'll vape your asses, and skipped the horseshit though."

"Gee Skip, I wonder why you never made it onto on of the Diplo teams."

"I was, once. Mind you it was for Fafnir, and they said I was too indirect and wishywashy".

The bridge crew broke up at that, as they settled in for what was no doubt to be a long wait. Fortunately, their comms officer had cracked the codes for the main pornography node back home before leaving, so they shouldn't get nearly as bored as they were on the last of these milk runs. Equally fortunately in its own way, the Hekartes weren't known for being spectacular tools, so things shouldn't go as badly as they had the time before that.

Sigma Epsilon 859

Apart from the one installation on the system's outermost body, there had been no credible space resistance. Of course, given the nature of the resistance posed so far, no one was in any hurry to come within a light hour of it. Even so, word had been sent back to the Ascendant for guidance and potential heavy assistance in case things went even more thoroughly wrong.

Initial landings had been successful, but they had been targetted on isolated areas of the smallest continent. Even so, the nearly universal resistance that had been encountered so far was disturbing in its intensity.

Captain Swift Death was, without a doubt, the most deadly Close Quarters Battle expert that the Badass Urban Combat Academy had produced in the last ten years. Once more, he checked his teams diagnostics, just in case anyone had had a spontaneous equipment failure in the five minutes since the last check.

So far, the first urban incursion had gone flawlessly. Even as he had that thought, he cursed as a series of heat and power sources appeared on his sensor array. Dashing forward, he blasted a hole in the nearest building, even as a pair of slugs ricocheted off of his armor.

Entering the building turned out to not be much of an improvement, as he batted a grenade back through a doorway an instant after diving through his newly made entrance. As the explosion settled and his team piled in behind him, he charged forward, shooting two people before pausing as a young boy entered his sight picture. His eyes narrowed, as the boy brought up the weapon he was holding, and breaking one of his personal rules, lowered his aim point and slashed a beam straight across the barrel.

Snarling, the boy dropped the weapon and lunged forward, pulling something from a pocket. Breaking another rule, Swift moved forward, bludgeoning the boy in the face with his gun, and sighing internally as he watched the grenade leave the boy's hand and fall towards the floor. Kicking it through the next doorway, even as he dropped a target rising from behind a piece of furniture, he began cursing every member of the Ravener hierarchy who had picked this specific hellhole.

Three minutes, one cleared building, and a score more downed hostiles later, Swift was still cursing as he took cover outside while waiting for the rest of his team. Two seconds later, he would have had even more reason to curse, had he been able to after three heavy weapons lit up his position.

His team dropped those three, and four more that revealed themselves to engage, but not before Private Johnson took a freak rocket hit to the skull.

The team hunkered down, frantically calling in for support, as figures seemed to erupt from every shadow to engage. For a minute they seemed to be dong fine as they rapidly dropped targets, before an incandescent beam swept across their improvised redoubt, and the field fell silent.

When the main force punched through barely five minutes later, after silencing the relic weapon, they only found two survivors, Corporal Schmidt, missing both his legs, and Captain Swift Death, down with innumerable shrapnel wounds, both comatose. It wouldn't be till the following day that the medical teams were able to tell which bits punched into him were weapon shrapnel, and which were fragments of his own armor.

Unfortunately, it really only went downhill from there for the rest of the invading force.

Shearwater
Outer Reaches

Skiffs from the Barrage at Firewater struck the freighter's hull like thunderbolts. Maneuvering thrusters scorched naked hull as the vessels burned their breaking engines at full power. Fanged bording tubes rammed into the supine freighter's hull, powerful cutting devices opening the hull in a half-dozen places.

Armoured figures burst through into the outer compartments of the quelectin vessel. The Civil Marines looked almost insectile in their round helmets and protruding bug-eyed air masks. Carapace armour hissed and clicked with every step, the faint sound of clockwork accompanying every motion. Khaki and forest green, the Marines stood out in the barren halls of the space-ship.

Weapons bristled as the Marines secured the outer hull.

Outer Edge of Kurak Space

Fleet Admiral James Doken sighed as he watched a series of readiness reports scroll past on a viewer, a slab of a highly unbreakable glass like material.

Recently long range scryer stations had picked up a massive hyper wake heading for Kurak Imperial space, and he was the lucky admiral who got to lead the Imperial Navy to meet the ships making the wake.

He was not paticulary convinced of their chances, if the fleet generating that hyper wake was hostile. Even with the summoning of all the patrol task forces into the grand fleet, it was still a limited number to what they heard many other powers could send.

Taking a quick look at a nearby time piece, he stood and headed for the bridge.

In space the rapidly gathered fleet moved rapidly, coming to a halt in a small dead star system just in front of the incoming fleet.

"Communications, I want constant first contact messages to go out from now on. Standard who we are, who you are stuff. Make sure they know we would like to make peaceful contact.”

"Helm, Ops, I want the fleet in battle formation. Make sure all ships are prepared to fight at moments notice, weapons hot and defenses active."

Admiral Doken sat down in his chair in the Fleet CinC room, leaving the running of the ship to the ships captain.

(I hope those ships are peaceful, whoever is making that wake is probaly bringing one whopping number of ships.)

Force Declaration:

2 Meteor Battleship (50)
11 Blaze Battlecruisers (25)
20 Shock Heavy Cruisers (20)
20 Aero Escorts (5)

Fighters, carried on above ships:
75 Bolt Fighters (2)
75 Flare Bombers (2) (bombers)

Kurak Space
Uninhabited System

Dropping out of ftl at the edge of the system for reorientation and to sample the signals of the local are the fleet received a surprise.

Commander Borsnet, head of Offensive Tactical, turned to the command chair, "Ravener, unknown contacts detected. A little less than half our hulls, but as near as we can tell, roughly comparable power output."

Lieutenant Commander Seneto, head of defensivve tactical, chimed in "Detecting directed signal output. Some of its probably just active sensors, but we're running it all through the translators anyway. First results now"

"BReexxht Imperial Kurak Space, -krechs- desire knowledge -klechuyhn- Wish for peaceful interaction -buutyunhhj. We repeat. You have entered Imperial Kurak Space. We desire knowledge as to your intentions and identities. While we wish for peaceful interaction, we will not hesitate to defend ourselves. Please reply."

"That was commendably quick, commander."

"Can't take the credit, Ravener, they initiated with a comprehensive first contact handshake, and their language base has a lot of root similarities to the last group of chuckleheads we annexed out this way."

"Let's just keep that to ourselves, shall we? Broadcast the following: 'We are the Raveners. By what rights do you attempt to impose limits on what we may choose to do?'"

"I'm sure that that's going to go over beautifully, boss. Are you sure we shouldn't just send the faked imagery of us eating babies while you're at it?"

"Only if they turn out to be pathetic weaklings."

Falau'un System, Falau'un Cruinne

The High Councillor Hieran Da'shu, Lord Da'shu stood in front of a large representation of the known local space made of lucent crystal of various colours. One could almost assume it was an art piece, but when one concentrated, the crystal moved, twisted, grew in one place, shrunk in another. The War Council was located deep within Mount Yierach, several miles below the capital. It was a vast complex that dated back to the Extermination Wars, without any physical connections to the outside; one could only teleport inside. A useful thing back then, when they had to fight normals, but now just a sentimental remembrance of the past.

The galaxy had become a larger place in recent weeks and months and he looked concerned. "You feel it too, do you?" He adressed the other Falau'un in the room, seated behind him around a large table.
"Yes, High Councillor," Aran Yel'Vach, House Erian, Councillor of War, answered. "A subtle disturbance in the fabric of Universe. Something is happening. Somewhere. Our Diviner divisions couldn't pinpoint it. But we are sure it is something great."
"Yes," Da'shu answered. "I doubt it will threaten us directly. But I feel that more of this could happen. And maybe to us, too. We have been complacent in our little box, afraid of others. But only because we might fear our Balance would be disturbed, our Council shattered. I will have none of that. It is time to come out of our shell, to put a bit of stick about so to speak. We must act. Now, before it is too late."
"What do you propose?"
"First, we must expand our knowledge of the other nations, what is happening out there. I authorised High Battle Mage Org'Wan to commence contruction of listening posts outside of our territory, some as far reaching as the core. We must hear and see before something happens. Secondly, we will send out units of the SIS and establish a more thorough network. If need be, we must crush opposition from within, though it will be difficult. It also involves some genetic reconstruction of operatives, but it must be done. And thirdly, we must start expanding our direct sphere of influence further out. There are worlds just outside the border, that might prove useful. Planning also begun within our Military to expand ourselves within these planets and other nations. Though we first must know what they are, what they can do, and whether we can use them as allies, or just have to crush them."
All heads nodded in unison.

***

A dozen small group of ships soon left Falau'un Cruinne and left the system for various locations to begin contruction of long-range listening posts.

Unbeknownst to the two fleets currently in the system, a dozen Collective recon frigates had dropped into the system, under cloak. Their mission, for now, was wait and watch. See what developed from this encounter. Gain intel on both sides capability.

"Well, here they are." Spoke up Warden Wokun, the cheif scryer. "It looks like they have around double our hulls, similar power output though."

Across the bridge the cheif communications tech looked up, as several lower ranked enlisted men worked feverishly at their consoles nearby.

"Hmm, we are picking up on what seems to be a response to our first contact package. They most likely have a pretty good translator. I am running it through the translate spell matrix now."

Several minutes later the message sounded across the bridge.

"bzzt are the Raveners. By what rights brefc you attempt to impose durik on what we may choose to do?'"

Fleet Admiral Doken sighed and took a look at the projected tactical plot.

"Comm record this message, and broadcast it to their fleet. Also, is the FTL link working?"

The communications warden nodded her head, as one of the enlisted men spoke up.

"Yes sir, everything sensor record, every communication, just about everything we are getting is being sent back to the home planets and fleet command on as secure a beam as we can get."

Admiral Doken nodded and motioned to start recording the message.

Taking a deep breath, he began to speak in a calm polite tone.

"By the right of living here, and of having lived here for untold years."

"We would prefer to establish peaceful communications with you," his voice suddenly took on a darker, and more dangerous tone, "But we are perfectly willing to blow you to whatever paradise you believe in if we have to."

He sat back in his chair, his voice once more back to being calm and polite.

"But on a more peaceful note I was wondering if you would like to open relations with us? I have been firmly directed by the Imperial Majesties to offer to escort some of your fleet to one of our planets to meet with him, and other high ranking officals. I am sure you can understand why we cannot allow you to take your full fleet into our space."

Making a slashing motion with his hand, Doken nodded to the communications techs.

"Send the message, inform me if we recieve a response. Weapons, Scryers try and spot the fleets command vessels. Don't target them or anything, but I want to take them out in the first slavo if this goes to hell."

OOC: The Fleet Admiral is one the flag bridge and the crewman he is directing are the ones relaying his orders etc etc. The flagship itself is being controlled by the ship's captain on the main bridge.

Kurak space

The destroyer slithered out of Netherspace in full stealth mode about 4 light years out of the nearest Kurak system. Its hull configured to a matte black and absorbing as much potential detection signals as possible. Its system were running as low as possible and almost all technological devices that could be turned off were. It mostly just ran off its reality-changing magic.
The ship's passive sensors began to listen and suck in everybit of information they could about this new nation.

***

Equally tasked ships lay hidden just outside Ravener, Avalonian, ASC, and Benefactor space.

***

A dozen groups of ships came back into this reality in systems located on a rough circle around the regular border several light years off the borders, also in full stealth mode. The respective systems they entered were barren places, often without habitable or otherwise interesting planets. A destroyer stayed behind, whilst the construction ships moved closer to suitable bodies, mostly moons that would not attract any attention. Manifesters immediately began the construction of long-range listening posts, that would enable them to feel ship movements several light years out and get data on other nations.

"Wonderful!" exclaims Vlaska, sounding quite pleased at the rapid movement of negotiations. "We too have basic ground rules that every merchant, contract pilot, corporation, or trader in our space must adhere to. While not as impressive as your Spacing Guild, various Unions can offer similar services within Republic territory. Finally, our Transit Authority and Home Fleet will require cooperation from trading ships in ensuring the safety and security of everyone. Apparently, we are all on the same page here," he adds with a laugh. "Our agencies will be more than willing to cooperate with yours in ensuring that trade between us runs smoothly."

There is a short pause, the Shindra looks at Vlaska for a moment, "The regulations governing trade with non-governmental entities have been in place from time immemorial. Such trade can start as soon as the merchants show-up on our space. Trade with sovereign nations, however, does require a specialized treaty approved by our General Assembly. And speaking of governments," Vlaska now turns to address Jacob Bashir, "the Republic would also be interest in establishing formal diplomatic relations with Loch. Making an embassy, stationing some diplomats to run it, drawing-up negotiations procedures, the works."
"I'm sure we can make the neccessary arrangements," Jacob replied, "there's a lot of spare room in this complex, and it is basically what it's designed for."

"We'd like to return the favor with the establishment of a Guild Union Embassy on one of your worlds. The embassy can be used to contact the Guilds, the various patron worlds and even Concord should the situation call for it." Sutiri speaks.

"Given their nature, they usually take up a little more space then a conventional embassy, but we'd be more then willing to lease the land and it beats having to establish contact with over thirty different organisations within the region." Alastair smiles broadly at the Mekidar diplomats.

Meanwhile...

Shearwater

The occupants of the freighter were too frightened to offer any resistance. Equipping the passengers with vac suits was impossible given the restraints on time and resources, this anything the passengers could have used in defense would probably have resulted in dire consequences. A few were considering how difficult it would be to put something sharp through that armour.

Meanwhile, in Shearwater's high orbit...
The Guardian screeched along the flightdeck of it's host's flightpod. With most of the fighter's vital systems damaged in the attack it was impressive that it was able to land at all. The fighter was pulled through a large airlock and onto the hanger deck.

The deck gang, wearing vac suits, sprayed the still hot wounds with a nitrogen compound that seemed to act as a coolant and decontaminant, white steam billowed over the fighter. Once it was deemed safe the hatch was popped and the pilot removed himself, unsteadily, via the step ladder. The deck gang remove their helmets and immediately get to work on the fighter.

Weaker then a child that had just awoken from a terrible nightmare, the Quelectin pilot flying as Alpha one turned to the deck chief.
"Where are the others? Did anyone else make it back?" His voice labours.

The deck chief, looking solemnly at the flight leader, responded "I'm sorry Colonel."

The pilot stood there, the expression on his face dropped as his heart almost stopped. There were a few moments of unconfortable silence before the Chief realised that he had to finish the explanation.

"Beta, Epsilon and the rest of Alpha. They're all gone sir."

Images of the attack repaid themselves through the pilot's mind. Memories of frozen alien bodies being forcefully ejected into space by their own atmosphere, for a brief time, warmed his heart as his bloodlust was quenched. But that was then, all he could feel now is a cold shiver as he realised that instead of becoming a great martyr for his people, he'd sent everyone he cared about to become martyrs in his stead.

Until a few minutes ago, duty and honor seemed like such simple concepts.

An idealist would fight for whatever cause was worthy enough, nomatter how impossible, nomatter what the odds to achieve what (until fate would prove otherwise) impossible goals. Marshal-General Coldrock, commander of all forces stationed at Shearwater, was a realist. By know the Quelectin had a good knowledge of what was lying in front of them. They knew that the forces that would be upon them would greatly overwhelm Shearwater's defenses. The probability of the Silver Flame surviving a prolongued campaign with these assailants was uncertain whereas the chances of successfully defending Shearwater were the opposite.

The goals have shifted from that of impossibility to that of uncertainty. Now all Coldrock needed was a way to change the rules so they could reclaim some probability.

"ORC Drives ready Sir."

"Tell the section commanders to relay a message to the people of Shearwater. Tell them not to lose hope. We will return for them. All craft, execute ORC jump."

With the actions of what history would remember as either a wise leader or an abject coward, the vessels in high orbit around Shearwater faded from the Crobuzon sensors.

Outer Edge of Kurak Space,
Uninhabited System

"Well, at least they have some steel to them."

The following broadcast went out: "Living in an area for any length means nothing, it is what you do with your time that gives it meaning. The universe cares not for your history, only for what you do now, and in this, we and the universe are one."

There is a signifigant pause at this point, and the voice resumes:

"So far, your actions show you to be worthy of our attention, as you came forth to meet us, and did so in as near to equality as make no difference. We will abide by whatever terms of contact you dictate, until we choose not too."

OOC: You are pretty sure that the ship that's more than twice the size of any of the others, and the direct source of the broadcasts, is the flagship. Past that point, there's so little variation in size and currently active emissions that subordinate command vessels are impossible to differentiate.

Deep Space Listening Post AF2

"Transport Nan-George-One-One-Six-Eight-Seven clear for departure"
"Flight Seven-Six-Able-Easy-Four Heavy outbound release is clear"
"Easy-Two-Four-Niner docking permission accepted at terminal four"

DSLP-AF2 was a busy station, expanded over the years and now served as a major transit control point. United Stations Parcel Services, Ltd. used it as the last national stop before launch outbound to foreign nations, citizen traders or explorers in the sector; at any time space traffic control had their hands full watching their scopes. Convoys were already marshalling - most of the vessels standard freight units linked to each other. A propulsion stack at front mounted engines on booms and finally, a cramped cab. Tugs were assembling the final containers, checking the interlocks and examining the vast space trains.

Several light interceptors of the 75th Fighter Interceptor Squadron flew top cover while a pair of corvettes moved into position to escort them onto their final destination. Several trains had units destined to resupply ships patrolling the frontier and exploring systems and thus the group warranted an escort at least partway through the vacuum of space. And as final clearance was received and ships reported ready, the first of their jumps began.

The crew of the freighter were herded into a boardroom by armoured marines, their small bodies pushed and hurried mercilessly by the behemoth assault troops. A deep, reverberating noise filled the ship's hull as space crews fastned long, hardened tethers to the two destroyers taking position two kilometers off. The long, super-dense cables allowed the powerfully engined destroyers to move the captive ship.

On board the 3rd Battle of Armada, officers scurried about their business as a new contact arrived at system's edge.

OOC: Since I already have a monitoring satellite a few lightyears outside my eastern border to function as a communications relay...

Avalonian FleetCom East:
<FleetCom Local, this is DST-Local. Listening post 2X4-A16 is detecting anomalous signatures near PX6-17O. Getting faint signal returns from the secondary SDR array.>

<Find out what it is>

<Aff. Bringing primaries online, establishing datalink. Recieving telemetry...now. Unidentified vessels located, near the teritiary moon of PX6-17O-C. Few emissions detected, they appear to be running pattern-whisper.>

<Acknowledged. Comm-Local, dispatch the closest vessel to investigate, pattern ghost.>

<Pattern ghost confirmed. Dispatching Conservator.>

PX6-17O System:
The Conservator circled around the PX6-17O system at low-superluminal speeds, gently probing the Falal'un vessels and what they were constructing with its own rather impressive compliment of sensors.

Near Crobuzon space

The stasis field turned off and Chestin studied the system displayed before her while the fusion power system of her ship recharged the jump system.
While the great machine that controled the Diem's expansion continued to slowly explore at a pace that rivaled continental drift, a few with enough personal resources to construct starships and the insanity to leave the settled worlds behind were leaping ahead of the planned progressions. Normally a few years of fruitless explorations would lead to them returning to thier worlds, because though insane none would venture far from known space...not even to go after the tantalising signals that indicated still existant ancient races.
Chestin was different though, running her ship to the range of the simple and underpowered jump drive until she encountered a world on which the race called humans still lived. This world, though very poor by even the standards with which they judged themselves, was in occasional contact with other worlds and small star-nations.
Further explorations and the exchange of some technological resources as well as information have led to the rumor of a huge nation. The rumor was obviously true...from this close Chestin's ship recieved hundreds of years worth of slower than light communications which were degraded greatly by time but were still good enough to be shown to be from a culture that was fairly similar within itself and was of a staggering size.

Chestin recalled all but a few units of her ships Very Large Array and checked to make sure that the nodes were charged to jump out almost instantly if trouble happened. A messanger pod was also sent out before Chestin made one more jump, about 10 light years to within a light year of an inhabited systems Outer fragment sphere (oort cloud. She's more than a light year away from the system's star) and began transmitting location data in faster than light datawaves and the arcane transmission methods traded dearly for a long time ago.

Benefactor Border Systems

The deployment of new toys was always met with some degree of both wariness and ecitement, particularly in the mind of a fighter pilot. After a few runs the aprehension started to wear off as they became more comfortable with their surroundings. A few twists and turns, firing the afterburners and experiencing the threshold were the science of the dampers is overcome by the raw power of gravitational forces involved with such maneuvers soon had the pilots feeling at peace with their new Starwolves, just as they had been the Pyres from yesterday.

"Confirmed, Wolf Three, commence attack run and destroy target."
"Copy Wolf Leader."
The move was swift and graceful, the Starwolf's thrusters kept the small craft travelling sideways in a perfect arc around the asteroid as it's forward mounted guns hammered into asteroid. Hot molten rock broke and fragmented, spreading debris in all directions.
"Target destroyed, heading back."
The Starwolf easilly navigated through the debris field and returned in formation with it's two counterparts.

"Alright gentlemen, that about raps up our..." For a moment, the leader almost thought he saw something appear on his sensor. It dissapeared almost as suddenly as it appeared. In these areas such readings are not uncommon, especially with the various substances in among the debris. For a second, it appeared again.
"The sensor's picking up something, anomalous emissions."

The science officer on their host vessel was also watching.
"There's an unusual radiation emission in the area. It's very weak, possibly part of a sensor sweep or a propulsion system."
"One of us?"
"Potentially. Or possibly a by-product produced by the asteroid on impact with your weapon systems. I reccomend an active sensor sweep of the immediate area."
"Proceed." The Captain ordered.

The science officer looked over the data as it streamed through. He began tapping the controls.
"Anything?" The Captain asked.
"Please give me a moment to collate." A few moments pass, the officer scratches his chin as he does a little mental arithmatic. "It's an emission following a linear path, decaying rapidly. My best guess, part of a propulsion system. Someone besides ourselves passed through this area a short while before our arrival."
"Can you identify what craft would have left the emissions?"
"Not immediately, they're very weak and there are a number of known propulsion systems that would leave behind this kind of radiation, including those catalogued at the Ganymede incident. I can tell you that it was not a Concord vessel. Given that our initial scans didn't turn up anything when we entered the system I would imagine that whoever was here is probably trying to remain quiet. The emissions end a short distance from here, if there is a vessel travelling under interia from that point I can calculate an appoximate position."

"Send the fighters to that position and have them scan the area."

A few minutes later, three small contacts appeared on the Falau'un sensors, rapidly approaching.

The ship was detected by the destroyer as it started circling around the system.
Air-Mage Elraun, House Del'shu wasn't particularly pleased. He had hoped that they would be further along the construction; and more to the point, that they wouldn't be detected. But no use crying over kids that fell into the chasm. The system was, after all free for grabs.
He let them circle around the system for a while, before he reacted. No need to show them how good the detection systems were.
"Well, Filad," he said to his communication officer, "if you please VisuaPort them?"
"Sir," the communication officer answered him, "we can't do it. They might react badly to it, and without a receiver, I might have problems getting a fix on them."
"Right, right," the Air-Mage said. "Then, by all means, use the hypercom device if you must." After a few seconds, a thought crossed his mind. "DataPort the Central Command. We might need some additional throw wheight here in the future."
"Online, sir," he answered. "Go ahead."
"Unidentified craft," the transmission went out, "this is Air-Mage Elraun, House Del'shu, of the Falau'un Council. This system has been taken by the Falau'un Council to build a scientific research station and trade outpost. What could we possibly do for you?"
It was, after all, not an outright lie.

"Air-Mage," the sensor officer spoke up, "I think we have been discovered. I have three small contacts on the sensors and approaching rapidly. Suggestions?"
"Damn," he cursed under his breath, "Must've been detected. Time for plan B I think. Ready the hypercom to contact them, power up the Netherspace nodes and prepare for immediate departure. Ready self-destruct sequence and sound the pre-evacuation alarm. We might have to teleport home, so get your thoughts clear."
After seconds that seemed to stretch into hours, he got the OK back from the stations.
"Now, time for some acting," he murmurred. "Get me life."
When he got the telepathic thumbs-up, he started speaking. "This is the Falau'un destroyer Uhla'ran. We are on a scientific mission and performing difficult scans of a very rare, delicate magical phenomena in the vicinity. Your presence endangers hours of valuable work for the Falau'un Science Council."

Crobuzon space
The Promise of Fortune was an old, run-down freighter. At least it did its best to appear that way. In fact, under the outer shell, it was in pretty good shape and equipped with more than just civilan-grade sensor systems hidden very well under scores of other systems and magical protection
. It carried several tons of Liithe, a very rare, very delicate, and very expensive fabric that should attract some interest. It also carried other luxury goods of Falau'un Cruinne. If nothing else, they would make money. T
It appeared on the edge of a Crobuzon border system and slowly moved in-system. They announced their presence and their intent to open a trade lane with Crobuzon. Hope was, Crobuzon was at least interested.
