Seriously, this book is amazing. It's not just the subject matter, which is fairly provocative in and of itself. His writing style is very easy to read, very insightful, and very compelling. The introduction alone is fascinating, as a very concise quasi-autobiographical depiction of how a boy from a moderately religious family becomes a full-blown Bible-thumping fundie, and then finds his way back out again.

I've seen stories like that before, but this one moves so quickly, is packaged so neatly that the Introduction section of this book could easily be quoted as a standalone article on how the mind of a fundie works, and how a fundie can climb out of that hole.

I was very surprised to see this book on the best-seller shelves at Borders' when I was in Boston. Looks like it might make a significant impact. Must get a copy of it soon.

Interested parties might want to get Ehrman's "Orthodox Corruption of Scripture" instead. Same guy and same topic, but alot more detail and (I think) nearly as easy for the layperson to get into.

Another good one is called "Ken's Guide to the Bible." I found it in the comedy section of the bookstore, but it has a lot of good stuff inside; a worthy addition to any atheist's bookshelf.

I will add it my (burgeoning) wish list. Something to get at a later date especially from what Darth Wong was saying on it.
