I loved the Harrier comic books "Redfox" and used the handle "Blackfox" for Photon (indoor laser-tag) in 1989. I used it off and on a a handle but mostly for e-mail accounts.
On the New York Times gun-control forum I originally started posting as "kettebarona" because that's the name of one of my main characters in my story (see Fanfics) that I hope to finish and publish this winter. I pulled that story out and started editing it about the same time I started posting to the NYT forum, staving off the idiot repressive antics of a bunch of east-coast uber-leftists.
The NYT forum got shut down many times because people got really hot on the thread, and later I joined again as "Coyote954". I like Coyotes, I admire their abilty to thrive anywhere under the harshest of conditions, and I'm a born-n-bred Westerner. The "954" came from a long-ago and long forgotten Sovier satellite, "Cosmos 954", that crashed in the Canadian forest in the early '80's. So many other people used the handle "Coyote" I needed a number I could remember.
I try to use some variation of Coyote now whenever I can, either CanisLatrans or Ze'ev-Ma'arav. I don't use the German "Steppenwulf" 'cause mostly people think of the band, not the scruffy, wild doggy.

Something about Libertarianism always bothered me. Then one day, I realized what it was:
Libertarian philosophy can be boiled down to the phrase, "Work Will Make You Free."
In Libertarianism, there is no Government, so the Bosses are free to exploit the Workers.
In Communism, there is no Government, so the Workers are free to exploit the Bosses.
So in Libertarianism, man exploits man, but in Communism, its the other way around!
If all you want to do is have some harmless, mindless fun, go H3RE INST3ADZ0RZ!!
Grrr! Fight my Brute, you pansy!

Irishmick79 was a single stroke of self-naming brilliance that I very likely will not be able to surpass. It was my first screen name, and will likely be my only.
Where did the name come from? I happen to be Irish, for one. My last name happens to start with a Mc, hence the 'Mick' part, and I was born in 1979, hence the '79' part.

During my early BBS career, my usernames usually had "M" in them, because it was my first inital. It sounded dumb. Then, I tooled around with adding numbers. First, it was 4, then, it was 314. Stupid names too. Then, I eventually gave up on posting on BBSs for a while.
Because of characer limitations, my username had to be abbreviated. Now, I think it sounds plain stupid. Perhaps I'll "promote" myself sometime soon.

Ahh. There are some other companies that make electrostatics that aren't as expensive, though they require a beefy amp (as their impedance varies a lot in operations - moreso than normal loudspeakers)aerius wrote:I wish, they're a bit out of my price range, and my vintage amp will probably hurt itself trying to drive them. I've had chances to listen to them thanks to my friendly audio dealer and they sound amazing. I was able to listen to MartinLogan Prodigy's for about an hour at a store downtown, even though they knew there was no way in hell I was buying them. They are so nice it's not even funny, but for something that costs $10,000 US it damn well better be orgasmic.phongn wrote:Oooh, electrostatics. I've been meaning to bug you about your user name, specifically the typo in the word "The" where the "h" is capitalized. Couldn't you get Mike to change that? It's insufferable to a grammar nut like me.THe Yosemite Bear wrote:1. My own name: Colin Brian Witz

My turn!
First, in Wing Commander, I picked out "Blackjack" for my callsign....not
for teh card game....but for the heavy lead filled truncheon that blackguards
used to knock the fuck out of people.....and this was at ten years of age
Then I did a lot of AOL accounts....I can't even remember them anymore....
Then i picked RyanWolf for my username for Erols internet after
my first name, and then Wolf from Virtua Fighter.....
I then picked up MKSheppard much later by inventing a first name
that sounded cool for General Shepherd (or Sheppard) from the
original Command & Conquer and I've used it for the last 5+ years,
excepting a time a year or so ago when I went completely fucking
out of control on ASVS in much the same way RayCav went out of
control a month ago....
I think Wilson still hates me for that....

At GundamProject MB, I registered as "Gyan-san". Sadly, those boards folded less than a month afterward.
I've also been a lurker at GundamShop and, to a lesser degree, Spacebattles, although I never registered at either.
As for the etymology of my name:
Zaku II was the first mobile suit ever seen on screen and was quite the underdog of Mobile Suit: Gundam.
-chan is a japanese suffix tacked onto a person's name when being spoken to by a close friend or loved one. Occaisionally translated as "cute".

We have too many people who log on here and try to play games, make sock-puppet accounts, etc. so I figured that username-change rights would probably be abused for the same purposes.Rob Wilson wrote:OK, am I missing something? The evolution of ASVS's one man offtopic party.
Original nick: Archmage.
archmage@xtra.co.nz was my first email address, I haven't accessed that account in years, I remember how awe inspiring this new era in global communications was when I churned into the internet with my 14.4k modem so I could download emails from people I didn't even know telling me how I could increase my bust size.
The Second nick: Blade.
Now, Blade was used as a name by a lot of fictional characters at the time. People would often try to guess which Blade I was. In truth, I was actually a fan of Teknoman at the time and Blade was the name of the main character. This proved confusing later on as it turned out that the American version of Teknoman had the main character's name as Slade. I was also using the nick when playing Starcraft, and trying to explain where the name came from wasn't easy as the greater majority of Starcrafters either didn't speak English or were retards.
The Third nick: Darkened~Blade:
Now, personally I thought Darkened~Blade was a cool nick for use on battle.net. I wanted to add a bit of flavor to my old nick to reflect the fact that I was getting a bit better at starcraft. Adding the word Darkened also made the nick unique so I wouldn't have to explain its origin. this was also the first nick I used on usenet. Now, the problem with this nick was the Starcraft Bnet interface would only show so many characters in a name. "Darkened~Blad" was all that would appear. The repeted questions about urinary infections saw the end of that nick. It was also around this time that I posted my theory about homosexuality being a genetic defect to alt.games.starcraft in a thread titled "Gayness is Genetic." This started a very long flamewar that ended up spanning over a dozen groups, see how many hits it brings up on groups.google.com
Spyda: Short, to the point, and I could make a really neat ASCII graphic to go with it in usenet posts. Everyone loves ASCII graphics!
Spyder: Same name, decided that the a was too ebonics.
Spyderizer: A new iteration of the name. I'm trying it on forums and games. I would have switched to it months ago had my SGotM rankings in five different newsgroups not been in jepordy.

Alan Bolte is my real name, I prefer it in a context like ASVS or SD.net.
I've had quite a lot of screen names, a few that I can remember:
Yoshi(various # combos)
Boba Fett
IG88
Spike
Quill
Scribe
But the only SN I've had that I've used consistantly, that you might say mattered, is Daan of Clan Quitk, Lord of the Har'Quil.
Variations:
Lord Q'Daan (note Q from Quitk)
Lord of the Porcupines
This started up when I needed an empire for playing Space Empires 3 on the Borg Collective Tournament Grounds, which no longer exists (The guy who ran it is now working on a new project at halo43.com). I created one based upon my hair. One of my elementary school teachers had joked that it looked like a porcupine had crawled up and died on my head, so my e-mail addy became porcupine_head. Then, for the Borg I created the Grand Coalition of Porcupines. The names for various things, and the empire's background have changed around with whatever I feel like at the time.
