I get so tired of all the "war mongering" and "sabre rattling" around the world. Why can't these countries be content with where they are, and be considerate and tollerant of their neighbors who don't share their same ideologies/religions???

I see the news and what is going on in Iran . . . . . . and I think how pathetic humans are. . . . . here in the 21st century, and many times we're no better than people 5,000 years ago or older! :x

What a coincidence that so much of this hate comes from religions which still venerate documents written during the Bronze Age.

Humans, unfortunately, haven't changed in fundamental nature in 5,000 years. We still are afraid of our neighbors, particularly in the International realm, where the world is like a group of people with no real overarching government, some of them strong and some weak, all of them watching the others. The 'anarchy of Nations.'

Well, . . . . . . it is true. . . . . unfortunately. It makes me wonder how religion would have been "looked at" today had it not been for all the "death to the infidels"/"sinners in the hands of an angry god" type ideologies.

There has always been and will always be intolerance and xenophobia. What religion does, unfortunately, is lend the weight of tradition and divine righteousness to it. It creates, in the strongest believers, an indomitable sense of self-certitidude which makes them impervious to calls for sympathy or attempts at reason.

Don't forget a goodly share of "I want what they've got." From what I recall of history, that's been the driving force behind many a war.

Earth, gold and women. The base cause of almost any conflict I can think of, though usually in a rather round-a-bout fashion for some.

What is Reason then if I may be so bold to ask?

An example of reason would be logical arguments, factual evidence, and so forth that we discuss here.

In the political realm, a good example would the French Monarchy in the Wars of Religion. After decades of persecution and internecine warfare in France between the Huguenots (Protestants) and Catholics, Henry IV creates the Edict of Nantes, which extends religious toleration in order to end the conflict. About 100 years later, Louis XIV (a devout Catholic in his later years), revokes the Edict, and starts up persecution of the Huguenots with all the problems that entails again.

In other words, we see religion act as a stupidifying influence, where it extends conflicts by offering a reason to do so.
