To sum up. At close range it happens to fast for a human to dodge it, at long range you may not know you're being fired on. Keeping your head down, keeping moving is probably the best way to 'avoid' gunfire.

Hey, maybe a bird will come by and shred a tortoise and let you take his shell!

It might be possible to dodge bullets, but not in the literal sense. I mean like somebody sniping from a few k yards away... The bullet will take time to travel, so if you move fast enough, you might be able to pull it off.
On this board it is more difficult to dodge a poke than a bullet!

About machine gun fire: if someone can dodge bullets individually (I know, friction and all...let's just say they're a cyborg and be done with it) then it wouldn't take THAT much more ability to dodge machine gun fire. It would be significantly harder, but not impossible.

There's going to be space between the bullets. If a gun fires 10 rounds/second at 300 meters/sec there's going to be 30 meters between any two bullets, plus whatever the spread is.

Let's just say get a Dune Holzmon shield before you try to do any Chow Yun-Fat or Matrix moves.

That might be a problem if I actually cared.

Watch equalibrium, the movie has a whole Martial Art based around gunfighting called Gun-Kata. Its not really dodging bullets, but it is moving your body out of the way where the bullet is most likely to be aimed at, giving the a person the widest range of fire. It is an intresting concept.

You don't actually dodge the bullets in Payne. It's a nifty visual effect that lets you see them, but you might just as well be in pause mode while the bullet is perforating you.

What happens when you dive is that your enemies miss. When you engage actual bullet time you are supposed to move so the enemies can aim, and it gives you really good reflexes so that you can make hyper-aimed shots even when you're moving and basically shooting from your hip.

Dodging bullets in real life is about dodging aim. For instance if you see a hostile with an AK-47 pointed at you wand he's pulling it against his shoulder, the time to move would be NOW. Dodge BEFORE they pull the trigger. More realistically you hear the/see the first bullet and dive before they take a second shot (praying they have to reacquire due to recoil).

Generally speaking dodging bullets is for idiots. Smart people try to minimize target profile. I'm up, I'm seen, I'm down ... the goal is to never give them the time needed to track your movements. Running erraticly does didly squat against an auto in compotent hands.
Very funny, Scotty. Now beam down my clothes.

I have walked into a room (that I knew was heavily populated) while in bullet time and it is possible to avoid shots after they have been fired, meaning that I moved after the bullet started moving.

Navies use pretty much the same tactic. Chance course and speed often to reduce the chance of a hit.

What is the fastest an organic body could realistically move in an earthlike enviroment?

3 ways:

Actually dodging a bullet. Matrix style. You need to be fast enough to realize the bullet has been fired, and move out of the way. Quite frankly, if you can do this, you can simply take the bullet with minimal injury.

Jedi style. You know your enemy is going to fire BEFORE he does. You have to know far enough in advance that you have the time to dodge it (having better reflexs like a Jedi helps).

Dodging the aim. Before he fires you're out of the way. This is the only way that works. But unless you can find cover, a automatic gun will eventually hit you.
