 Which is only made worse by the fact that MoO2 was one of very few games that required the CD in the drive to play [EDIT: at the time] :(

Oh well, just go and get MoO3.

You could actually play it without the CD, if you edited the INI file (and the registry) along with copying all of the files to the HD.

Unfortunately, it is badly scratched so that I can't even install it :(

I believe they are refering to some sort of computer game titled Masters of Orion 2. Is that correct, guys?

Anyway, Phongn is lamenting that his CD is scratched beyond the maximum level of readability.

Yes, we are indeed refering to Master of Orion 2, one of the best computer games to date IMNSHO.

There is a device that polishes most scratches out of a CD. Look under "repair damaged CD discs" google search and at least 3 will show. I personaly own "disc doctor". It is well worth the 15$(USA), as one game dics is usualy at least twice this price.
Hmmmmmm.

I may go grab one from the mall later and attempt to repair it.

Take care, as it will not take out ALL of the scratches, only the shallower ones, your dics may be beyond repair. If the disc repair kit doesn't work, you have one last option. Go to the supermarket and buy a can of "Brasso", polish. Use this as a LAST option, as I do not know if it will chemicaly attack the disc plastic. It works wonders for removing the scratches out of watch crystals, plastic or glass.
Hmmmmmm.

That depends whether the damaged part is actually the layer that stores the data. This stuff is good for fixing the surface, just scratches in the plastics won't do anything to the information stored, but it might make it hard to read.

If the "tinfoil" like thing is damaged OTOH, you're screwed.

I remember when my second Baldur's Gate II disc got damaged by the CD eating fungus/bacteria/whatever. Fortunately I was able to rebuild an identical one from the files installed in my hard disc and whatever survived in the CD.

CDs can be polished to remove scratches, as long as the scratches are not too deep. A friend of mine has used this method (using rubbing compound on a sheet of glass) a few times with good success. It takes time, and you have to be patient.

Mind you, I started my PC-building off with a CD containing Windows 98 2nd Edition and a CD containing Office 97 Professional. A good team for loading up on a useable PC.

However, a year or two later both CDs were irreparably damaged by aluminium corrosion. But I shouldn't complain; they were both "backups" (if you know what I mean) from a friend. On the Office CD, a hole in the aluminium had appeared! Lesson learned: don't buy the cheap shit CD-R media...
