Nintendo does have a good point about the name being international. All the languages in the world can pronounce Wii.

I think I'll be hiding mine in shame and pretending the controllers are connected to a giant Krell machine under my house.

Oh and that when you turn it on it says 'nintendo'. It's all from the id, you see.

The XBox names was derided when it was first announced back in the day, yet you only call it a console name because people have gotten used to it. "Dreamcast", "Playstation", "Game Boy", "Gamecube" are all stupid names but have become commonplace because of time, just like "Wii" will. Nintendo probably just announced the name now just so they can focus on the games for E3.
