Oblivion help

Post by Ace Pace »

Help, Oblivion refuses to run.

I start it up, it starts the loading bar...a BIT, then crashs to windowed mode with error message.

I tried reinstalling game but no dice.

Exact error was

Code: Select all

Faulting application oblivion.exe, version 0.1.0.228, faulting module oblivion.exe, version 0.1.0.228, fault address 0x00168bc6.

Is this before the main menu? Or is this loading your saved game?

Before Main menu, I just tried restoring some tweaks I did to the INI regarding threading, didn't change anything.

I had the exact same problem. the only thing that fixed it for me was a reinstall. Make sure you make a backup of your saves and do it to it.

I figured that would do it. I had some changes to the thread count and buffer sizes in a config file that made Oblivion very crash happy.

I also had a problem where Oblivion would crash on loading a save - my UPS couldn't put out enough juice for my GTXs to kick in, resulting in a hardlock.

I'm also having stutter issues, where it locks up(completly randomly) for 10-35 seconds then returns. I can't track it to any repeteable occurence, except possibly overheating GPU but I doubt that.

The only time I get anything like that is if I'm crossing load boundary in a city or out doors (An imaginary line running from Chorrol's North Gate, through the Great Oak, and into the South Gate will stutter every time I enter the city and cross it), and that's most due to the over size LOD texture mod.

I'm wondering if you're seeing a thrashing issue. How much ram do you have, and how high are your graphics settings?

Thats background loading issues, tweak the ini file(iPreloadSizeLimit) to use more ram instead of the default ~500mb for caching. That way it can pre-load more and you dont need to wait for the disk.

Either that or stop running so fast :P

Considering my idle data use is roughly 300MB, should I set the RAM usage to say..750MB out of 1GB?

More. ~850-900mb If you get trashing then step it down by 25-50mb at a time

The "mem usage" reported by Task Manager is the worst case if everything must be used at once. You dont need everything in memory, most of that background shit you want out of the way so you can get on with gaming. Let on-demand-paging do it's job.
