The XBox names was derided when it was first announced back in the day, yet you only call it a console name because people have gotten used to it. "Dreamcast", "Playstation", "Game Boy", "Gamecube" are all stupid names but have become commonplace because of time, just like "Wii" will. Nintendo probably just announced the name now just so they can focus on the games for E3.

Anyone remember the clamor that was raised in the early nineties when Nintendo released a system and dozens of game sequels and remakes with the word "Super" as a prefix? That was heralded as the most lazy naming scheme ever in gaming. Despite this, people remember the SNES and some of the "Super" prefix titles for it as some of the best of their time.

I wonder what the reaction is in Japan and the other Asian countries is to the name. Wii, as I read in this IGN article that it was supposed to bring everyone who plays it together, because it can be pronounced the same way, or something.

Wii sounds like "we," which emphasizes the console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii.

Meh, could be worse. At least no one will put "Wii" in the title of all games. Or I hope they won't anyway.

And the name can be pronounced in all languages. Except in Swedish. We don't "naturally" have the "w" sound. We'll have to pronounce it "Vii" (which incidentally sounds identical to our word for "we").

In a way, I think that's part of what exactly they were aiming for.

But if I'm remembering correctly, Japanese doesn't have a "w" sound either... so won't it be awkward for them as well?

Mistake: They actually do have two modern "w" sounds: "wa" and "o/wo." "Wi" and "we" are archaic and obsolete. "Wi" is rendered as "U-i" and "we" as "U-e" in katakana.

My knowlage of functional Japanese is next to none, but I'd guess UI, taking advantage of the unvoiced u to make the mouth move while phonating before making the hard i sound.

Oh but neither is Dreamcast, you blather. Yes it is, Dream-Cast, words, real world words with definitions and everything. So is Play-Station, Game-Cube, Super-Nintendo though granted Nintendo is a company name not a word but still.

Wii is not a word. Nor is it any other form of deignation, like a number.

Wii comes from some simpleton who thinks this crap is cool.

I'll wait for games to come out, if it has enough i like 'll buy it...hide it's weak ass way where no one will see me playing a console called Wii, and constantly mock it during load-screens for having a sissy name.

'Wii' comes from some Japanese marketing team who looks at foreigners as a mix between weiner dogs and martians.

This honestly reeks of the typical "we can include everyone by making no sense to anyone" shamelessly aloof lack of understanding that brought us 'Touch Dic' and putting English on everything when they end up understand the results less than English-speakers do.
