Praetor battlecruiser powerlevel...

Post by VT-16 »

Looking at the SW:CL book, I notice the generator powering the ion cannon seen in ESB, is remotely linked to the main generators of the base. Now these are said to be taken from parts of a derelict Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser. I also notice that the battle-theatre shield generator is mentioned as being "Echo's power generator" (or at least one of them).

Looking at the Massassi base information, they get their power from turbines and the main reactor from an Imperial-class Star Destroyer. This powered the base, a shield, several ion cannons (if they're as big as the one in ESB, it doesn't say) and other defenses that could defend against one, large battleship.

Now, the total sum of defenses for Echo Base, kept an entire fleet of Imperial destroyers and one Executor dreadnought at bay, which is more than the ones for Massassi Base did.

You probably get where I'm going with this, so I'm asking for any flaws or holes in my theory. :P

I would think the powerlevels required wouldn't even need to be near what the Executor had. The reactor at Hoth wouldn't need to be powering such non-insignificant things like engines. Also, while the weapon it powered was strong, the Rebels only had one ion cannon, while a warship would have multiple weapons.

I would think the Praetor to be a quater (a third at maximum) of the size of the Executor (based on the claim, that a warship directs 25% of its reactor-output into shields).

Hmm. Guess you're right. The ion cannon was able to overwhelm the ray shielding on an ISD-II (as seen in the film and described in the book). I read somewhere that an ISD-II could withstand one full broadside of an Executor, does this mean it had a more firepower...? Or maybe if we take into account the wrong list for the Executor's guns (like 1000 instead of 5000)

In any case, I can't remember, did the ion cannon send out two or four shots at the ISD-II?

EDIT: Wait, "full broadside" would only mean all guns, not necessarily all guns directing all the power of the ship into the shots (as they can do).

Two, if I recall correctly. EDIT: It's been brought to my attention there are four shots, but only two connected with the ISD.

A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

Its not really that surprising the power needed to power shields is fall less than whats needed to drive the ion engines for instance. Take the Praetor's reactor core and couple it to the a large number of more efficent shield generators than a warship could feasibly mount, etc.

You also have to remember that the reactor could just be keeping a large number of subsurface power cells topped off. Say the rebels have an arbitrarilly large cache of power cells, that near capacity. It would take a very long time to expense that energy on the shield.

Also I would assume that the heatsinks of a planetary shield are larger than anything that could fitted of a warship. The power generator for the shields alone was scaled to nearly 2 km.

I would estimate the Praetor power output at around 5.0E26 W.

Personally I bracket the different classes like this:

Type/class: Power: W

Star Frigates:

Dreadnaught-class Star Destroyer - reactor output (0.6 km) 1.5E23
Acclamator II-class Assault Ship - reactor output (7.2 km) 2.0E23
Acclamator II-class Star Frigate - reactor output (7.2 km) 2.0E23
Rand Ecliptic-class Star frigate - reactor output (7.2 km) 2.0E23
Munificent-class Star Frigate - reactor output (0.82 km) 2.1E23

Star Destroyers: Escorts

Recusant-class Star Destroyer - reactor output (1.2 km) 7.7E23
Providence-class Star Carrier/Destroyer - reactor output 1.1E24
Rebel Assault Frigate (upgraded Dreadnaught) 1.8E24

Star Destroyers: Light

Providence-class Star Destroyer - reactor output 3.0E24
Venator-class Star Destroyer - reactor output (1.1 km) 3.6E24
Victory-class Star Destroyer - reactor output (0.9 km) 4.6E24

Star Destroyers: Medium

Imperator-class Star Destroyer - reactor output (1.6 km) 1.0E25
Tector-class Star Destroyer - reactor output (1.6 km) 1.0E25

Star Destroyers: Heavy

Allegiance-class Star Destroyer - reactor output ~3.0E25
Lucrehulk "TF Battleship" conversion reactor output (3.2 km) 4.0E25

Star Cruisers: Light

Home- 1 class Star Cruiser - reactor output (3.8 km) ~1.0E26
Shockwave-class Star Cruiser - reactor output (5 km) ~1.5E26

Star Cruisers: Heavy

~ 6-8 km ~2-5.0E26

Star Battlecrusiers:

Procurator-class Star Battlecruiser - reactor output (10 km) ~5.0E26
Vengeance-class Star Battlecruiser - reactor output (10 km) ~5.0E26
Quaestor-class Star Battlecruiser - reactor output (11 km) ~5.5E26
Praetor-class Star Battlecruiser - reactor output (12 km) ~5.5E26

Star Dreadnaughts:

Mandator II-class Star Dreadnought - reactor output (15 km) 7.8E26
Executor-class Star Dreadnaught - reactor output (19 km) 1.3E27

Also, a single shot with (for example) the power of x5 might be more effective then five shots with the power of x when it comes to piercing shields. That would let one very heavy weapon like a planetary ion cannon be more effective then many shots from a star destroys array of weapon. The disadvantage is such a big gun would get knocked out easier, and would be difficult and cumbersome to mount really large weapons a warship.

Of course, the energy focused on a smaller area rather than divided over a larger one. Thanks alot, this helps put things in perspective.

I'll need to rewrite that article on SW wiki. ;)
