Looking for cold plasma details

Post by nightmare »

I'm working on a half-baked theory, but cold plasma is something I don't know much about; nor can I find a whole lot about this relatively new field. Anyone care to help a bit?

Specifically, I'm interested in the difficulties of containing it, and how effectively it can excite matter.

What's this for, exactly?

I bet that he want to know about cold-plasma in terms of it's applicability to sci-fi type shields or stealthing. Those are about the only times you hear of it in common circles.

But, as this is plasma, the usual answers apply. 1) All plasmas require electromagnetic fields for containment. A cold plasma is no different. 2) "Excite" matter? Double-yoo Tee Eff? Presumably, if it makes contact with non-plasma matter, it will transfer some of its thermal energy into the matter and/or rob it of free electrons or discharge electrons into the target. However, the effects won't be all that spectacular, given the typically low densities of plasma.

There's your cold plasma right there. It's really not magic, you just use lasers to turn it plasmic without heating it up. It works basically the same way--the real advantage is that it messes with radar waves effectively and seems good at decontaminating things cuz it screws up cell walls. Owie.

It doesn't excite matter persay. Lasers excite matter. Cold and Ultracold plasmas are just room temperature soupy gases with a variety of interesting properties.

For some peculiar reason, I started to give myself the ultimate headache in trying to figure out turbolasers. Cold plasma is basically just ionized gas, but it can excite matter. I just wonder what the extent of it is. Same with magnetic confinement.

I would imagine that would be quite awful since it messes up the cell wall. *imagines nazi death from Indiana Jones*

Do a google on "Nightshot IR filter" then
A minute's thought suggests that the very idea of this is stupid. A more detailed examination raises the possibility that it might be an answer to the question "how could the Germans win the war after the US gets involved?" - Captain Seafort, in a thread proposing a 1942 'D-Day' in Quiberon Bay
