Naming a group of ships.

Post by Crossroads Inc. »

So question time. I was tossing around the idea of doing a FanFic, slightly post Clone Wars of a brand new Victory-SD grouped with a bunch of older ships to clean up posts along the outter rim.

The force would be, 1 Victory, 2 Dreadnaughts and 6 Carracks. I've always thought this grouping was rather nice and even used a Homeworld2 Mod to make a Screenshot of what the Ship formation would look like :D

But what I'm curious about is what the 'offical' name for the ships would be? Would any old group just be lumpped as a "Taskforce" Are there actuall names for different groupings of SW Warships?

Just curious :)

There was the Victory Fleet of first-gen Victory-class destroyers. They went up against the Separatist's Bulwark Fleet consisting of Bulwark-class Mk. I battlecruisers.

There was also a Storm Fleet, Separatist warships disguised as freighters.

And of course: Open Circle Fleet

Going by The Imperial Sourcebook, that force is too small to be considered a real fleet. It would be regarded as a heavy attack line (about 8 ships, no smaller than a light cruiser) escorting a VSD.

I'd call it a flotilla, or maybe a squadron, as in Death Squadron, though that used larger ships.

Certainly nothing more than a flotilla, and a reasonably small one at that. It seems in the vein of the Imperial task force seen in one of the earlier missions in XWA, composed of something like one ISD, a Dread, a few corvettes, a few frigates and an escort carrier. I'm all for variation, so siz Carracks seems a tad bland to me, plus there's not support ships there, so if its for extended ops away from base that could be a problem.

To be fair, they're never likely to be more than ten minutes from resupply.

I don't think such a small group of ships warrants a special name or anything. Just call it [VSD name]'s "task force" or "battle group" or something.

For a force that small, I think "Patrol" or something of that nature might be appropriate, although the name might be misleading, depending upon their deployment.

It seems like it'd fit best as a detatchment of a larger fleet, i.e. a patrol line of a fleet dispatched to some area or what not. It's too small to be a fleet in and of itself, same with an armada. It could also be a detatched strike force, forward-deployed to scout out ahead of the main fleet.

I'd go with squadron or patrol. However, if you want something with more 'umph' for a story, go with something along the lines of 'Victory Battle Group' or even an 'Assult Group'.

Play with .....BG or .....AG. Cruiser or destroyer BG/AG or like I said, Victory.

You could call it the 2478th Frigate Squadron, considering its 8 frigates and a destroyer as leader.
