Physics question in regard to King Kong
I just saw King Kong, and there's this pretty cheesy scene where he picks up Ann in NY and goes sliding around on the ice in what I guess is Central Park.
I've taken a couple classes regarding materials and stress, but not anything near being an expert. I was wondering how thick a sheet of ice would have to be in order to hold up a 10-ton (pulling a random weight out of my ass there) gorilla without breaking.
( For people who try to tackle that problem, you can assume the gorilla is a point mass for simplicity's sake. )

Lower limit for King Kong's weight is 18510kg, upper limit is the "official" 38 tons, or 34474kg.
The lower limit was arrived at by scaling-up from a normal gorilla. I did it to find-out the amount of kinetic energy the giant monkey had upon impact, after falling of the Empire State Building. My results here and here.

(Reads thread)
Nice. But they gave you the wrong numbers for the '33 Kong (I can't believe I missed a King Kong Thread!)
In the jungles, '33 Kong was 17 or 18ft tall. In the city, he's 21. Millenium Kong is, however, 25ft.

AHA! Here's that photo!
That is a production photo from the unmade "King Kong vs. Frankenstien", which is just nifty to share.

How would that have worked out? It's pretty clear why that wasn't made."King Kong vs. Frankenstien"

About 1 to 2 feet of ice based on the vehicles they use on the Rideau Canal. That's about the thickness of the ice there which of course depends on how cold it is that year. They use truck-mounted snowplows & snow blowers to clear snow off the ice and keep the ice nice & smooth, pickup trucks are used most of the time but I've seen them use what looks to be a 5-10 ton truck to clear some sections.

I'm not sure why people choose 'To Love is to Bury' as their wedding song...It's about a murder-suicide

One of the original concepts was that the Frankenstien Monster would not be the classic one--but an amalgamation of various African animals. The giant patchwork creature would need Kong's Arms to be fully functional.Jim Raynor wrote:How would that have worked out? It's pretty clear why that wasn't made."King Kong vs. Frankenstien"

It was Willis O'Brien's idea, but he presented it to an unscrupulous prducer named John Beck, who, without notifying or compensating O'Brien for the use of his ideas, offered it to Toho Studios, who altered it into King Kong vs. Godzilla. Willis O'Brien died poor and heartbroken. Toho made the movie, which was an enormous hit in Japan and quite a clever satire besides, and then Beck re-edited it into a piece of crap and released it here. How would that have worked out? It's pretty clear why that wasn't made. Laughing

This is the guy they want to use to win over "young people?" Are they completely daft? I'd rather vote for a pile of shit than a Jesus freak social regressive.
Here's hoping that his political career goes down in flames and, hopefully, a hilarious gay sex scandal. -Tanasinn
