LEGO Star Destroyer
I just recently completed my 10030 Ultimate Collector Series Imperial Star Destroyer. I haven't picked a name for her yet, but I'm working on it. Here are some pictures of her:
Here she is along with the built-to-scale Blockade Runner that came with the set.
A nice shot of the detail around the aft portion of the bridge tower. The tower was the funnest part to build, IMO.
Here I am with the completed destroyer. Ah, those were good times.
Think I'm trying to compensate for something with this huge model? Me neither.
A great angle on the destroyer, along with my 'internet nerd' pose. Grrr!
This Corvette's about to get its ass kicked. Hard.
So there you have it. Weighing in at 3104 pieces, it's the largest LEGO set ever sold. Now that it's done, I don't know where to put it. I think it makes a great conversation piece for the coffee table, but my parents think otherwise.
Anyhow, post your own pics if you've got your own LEGO ISD, official or otherwise.
Thanks go to Darth Wong for hosting the pictures.

I knew that was big, but, good god, that thing has got to be at least over three feet long! How much does it weight?
*drool* I must have it.

It's just over three feet long (37.7"), and it's almost two feet wide (23.6").
I haven't weighed it yet, and it's hard to get a feel for it, because to pick it up, you have to remove the bridge tower and the dorsal terraced decks (they come right off; they're not connected with traditional LEGO piece interfaces, they instead rest in notches that you build for them, and their own weight keeps them on). It's quite fragile, as you can imagine.
I'd estimate that it weighs 6-10 lbs. I'll try to get it on a bathroom scale, if I can find one.

Yeah, I was concerned about that. As it turns out, from most angles, it's not very noticeable. Also, I couldn't think of any ways to fix it. All the ideas I had before it came don't really work on the actual model.Ted wrote:The thing I don't like about it is the split down the middle, if Lego fixed that it would be the ultimate model.
Anywho, mine's coming soon, must wait 2 weeks.
And yes, my internet nerd pose is formidable.
The only major problem with the thing is that there's no secondary docking bay(!). I thought this was extremely strange, as it wouldn't have been that difficult to do.
In light of this glaring error, I'm unsure of what to classify the ship as. Such a large discrepancy is definitely evidence of a separate ship class, but I don't know what this one's called. I think I'll say it's a 10030-class destroyer for now. Conveniently, LEGO never says that this is an Imperator-class, only that it's an Imperial Star Destroyer. LEGO does imply that this particular ship has BDZ capability: "One Star Destroyer alone is enough to strike fear into an entire star system!" (LEGO Shop at Home catalog, Holiday 2002).

They do look kinda weird.Spanky The Dolphin wrote:What's with the sensor globes? They look kinda weird.
The tops halves of each sensor globe is made of a Cylinder 4x4 Hemisphere Multifaceted:
the bottom halves are made of a Rock Bottom with Craters. Here's a picture of that piece, though the one in the pic is transparant light blue:
http://www.peeron.com/inv/parts/30342
So, as you can sort of see in the pictures, the bottom halves of the sensor globes has craters on it, because it's made from a piece that was designed to be used as a rock in space system sets.
The reason they used that piece is sort of simple...it has a 2x2 connecting surface, and the multifaceted hemispheres don't have that. The supports for the sensor globes (made from LEGO levers) mask the craters, and you really don't notice the craters unless you're looking for them.
Since the bridge features on this model are those of an Imperator Mk I, the sensor globes are rounder than those on the Mk II (the bridge most commonly shown is a Mk II):
Notice that the Mk I has rounder sensor globes, which is well represented in the LEGO model. Also notice that the Mk I sensor globes protrude at an angle which is roughly perpendicular to the sloped surface onto which they attach. In contrast, the sensor globes on the Mk II and later protrude perpendicularly to the ship's horizontal axis.
The LEGO model is true to the Mk I's angled sensor globes.

Suggestion noted, Iggy's girlfriend. Sounds good.
It costs $269 before S&H. The price'll go up in January.

Yeah, the current one is the special holiday price. I don't know what the final price will be.
Not only is it the largest set ever, but it's also the most expensive.

I can't believe that shit. It looks like it's well worth the money, but then again, who can afford a fucking $300+ toy? Not only that, its fucking huge. I don't have the royal cruiser for the same reason. to damn big.

Yeah, it was quite a punch in the pocketbook, but at the time, I had the money, so I figured 'why not?' I also don't know where I'll put it, but that didn't enter into the equation when I bought it. I just knew I had to have it.
And Next of Kin, I think next I'm going to get myself a Republic Gunship.

I was out shopping today, and went in a Lego shop. They had a Star Destroyer there, complete in more than 3100 pieces, and at the princely (but not unreachable) price of £225!!
Go for it, guys!
