Need help with a school project- what do you think of rap?

To be entirely fair, how much classical music isn't about how tough, awesome or how much bling bling God has? How much music at all isn't aggrandising concepts that are kinda lame at the core, or a retelling of violent events or insipid romance which is just humanity's means of ensuring fucking?

Lots of it? Very little instrumental classical music tells a concrete story, per se. It's generally difficult for instrumental music to relay a concrete tale, but quite easy for it to convey an impression or emotion -- for instance, the Eroica Symphony is all about heroism, and this comes through even from the beginning chords, but there's no distinct story to go along with it.Rye wrote:To be entirely fair, how much classical music isn't about how tough, awesome or how much bling bling God has?
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.

ES Posthumus is not a fucking rapper. Or have you not noticed that his CD is composed entirely of instrumental songs?Chardok wrote:Just for flavor...
E.S. Posthumus shows how sometimes, rap can be combined with classical-style songs to make good music....
He composes all the songs himself.

Oh look, someone who doesn't recognize what it means when I talk about how much of a genre does this, as opposed to the strawman version of my argument where I claim that this behaviour was completely absent in the past. I was more reffering to how he combines rap (Note the football song THEY (not HE, they're brothers) did. I think it works well. If you thought what I posted was criticism, you're sorely mistaken. Oh, I'm soooo sorry they've put out a single (and revealed who they really were) since last I looked at their website. A single which isn't even available to listen to on their website, I might add. How was I to know what it sounded like?Chardok wrote:I was more reffering to how he combines rap (Note the football song THEY (not HE, they're brothers) did. I think it works well. EDIT: Found a 2-minute sample of the song on the website where you can buy Posthumus' CD. It's by "ES Posthumus featuring DJ Quik and Bizarre". They are the rappers.

That's not what I was getting at all. I was under the impression that you were an AC/DC fan, so I find it a little weird that you would condemn a genre based on the fact that a sizable portion of popular rap is about tough guys and women. The melody stuff I get, but I just thought that was strange.Oh look, someone who doesn't recognize what it means when I talk about how much of a genre does this, as opposed to the strawman version of my argument where I claim that this behaviour was completely absent in the past. There's a reason that AC/DC didn't become a really big name until "Highway to Hell". Their earlier stuff just wasn't that good. People only like it in hindsight because it's associated with the same band that put out "Highway to Hell" and "Back in Black".HemlockGrey wrote:That's not what I was getting at all.
