I believe in such a thing as a human soul. I believe such a soul is what gives me sentience. Don't get me wrong i'm not turning into a bible thumper or anything. Well as i was saying when i die the energy that makes my soul will trandform into something else. A basic rule of science is that energy cannot be destroyed and while I don't know what will happen. But i'll let you know if I get the chance.

If you're going to use science, there should be a measurable heat release when you die due to your soul's evacuation from your body in addition to the heat release we observe happens when your corpse begins the process of reaching thermal equilibrium with its environment.Darth Pounder wrote:I believe in such a thing as a human soul. If I had to pick one afterlife-ish idea, it'd be reincarnation. I like the idea of having lots of chances to live different lives. The only drawback is that you don't have any of your former lives' accumulated knowledge. Bummer.

When I die, I hope it's peacefully, and in my sleep, like my grandfather...

*Shrug* When you die, you're dead. Under my religious beliefs, there is an eschatological granting of new life, but until then existence is terminated. No reincarnation, no ascending to Heaven or descent to Hell, everyone's dead and gone until the end times. There is no soul.

As far as I'm concerned, after you die, you as a person ceases to exist, and there is nothing else. Of course, this does not concern me in the slightest, as by definition I won't be around to care about being dead. In truth, death may be the only true freedom there is.

Hrmm. That would be an interesting philosophy to write and attempt to propagate.Zoink wrote:

If the passage of time is an illusion (which is increasingly believed to be a strong possibility) then the time you spend alive will always exist within the spacetime continuum. Although the limits of your existance (birth and death) limits the amount of information you receive (ie. a finite amount of experiences). I don't know if this translates into reliving the same experiences over and over, or whether we are experiencing everything at once and this "instant" is simply an illusion.... I don't know.

Yup. I think I can make millions from this. I forgot to add that believing this requires that you send me lots of money...The Duchess of Zeon wrote: Hrmm. That would be an interesting philosophy to write and attempt to propagate.
The Church of Temporal Constancy
Time's passage is an illusion. You exist as a 4D subset of a larger 4D universe. The more you cast aside this illusion of times passage the more you are at peace with your place within the universe....
I'll just forget to tell them that the other possibility is that this is all wrong, the passage of time is not an illusion, and that you do slip into nothingness.

Marcus,
Some more drunken philosophy to chew on:
"You walk up the mountain. You walk down the mountain. Then you can say you have walked."
"It's not the tree but the bark around it."

If trees could scream, would we be so cavalier about cutting them down? We might if they screamed all the time for no good reason.

I believe that there's no hell, or you only go there if you unjustly killed someone, but will go to heaven after a while, and that when you die, you get everything you wanted by didn't get in life on Earth. I like to have a positive outlook on death. I don't want to come back here as an ant that gets squashed after day 4. As for purgatory, I always thought of it as a waiting room with magazines and a cranky woman that screms "NEXT!" every 5 minutes. Even I think my visions of heaven and hell are screwed up...

Though I very much dislike the idea of non-existence, and am more scared of it than anything else i can possibly think of, it's definitely a MAJOR possibility, if not the only one.
But, I haven't resigned myself to anything yet. I'll cross that path when it comes, hopefully a century from now or so. (I'm 17! I can dream of an obscenely long life if I like!)

I had a Bill Maher quote here. But fuck him for his white privelegy "joke".
All the rest? Too long.

The thought of simply not existing anymore is extremely frightening. It's a great big 120mm thought sabot.

See, I don't see what the is to fear about non-existence. Pain, I have a problem is, but if I can't experience something, I'm not worried about it.
