So does this mean you get genuine strafing by pushing left or right on the Nunchuk's analog stick, while still being free to look around with the remote?Praxis wrote:In Metroid Prime and Red Steel, you point at the screen and a crosshair shows where on the screen you are pointing. Yeah, I've got a PS2 I haven't used in six months (save Singstar, lol), and given the ludicrous price of the PS3 I think a Wii might be my only next gen purchase. Certainly my only launch purchase.
The cord issue is one I've thought of myself - given that many of the games are going to involve pretty nuts swinging and waving, having them linked by a too-short cable would suck. I'm 6'4", so 'too short' is pretty long as far as I'm concerned. They're only on a cord (as opposed to both wireless to the console) because the grip-part is so small, right?
Actually, Praxis - do you use both bits equally, or one part more? Like, from descriptions of play, it seems like you often wave the remote part around for most stuff, with the grip only used for looking or what have you. Share your precious knowledge!

It's good to see the high-school bullies get their teeth kicked in now and then. I hope this new console is a huge success for Nintendo.

You know, this may be the first console I've bought at launch. In the past, I've always waited at least a year or two for the price to go down before I've bought a console, but I'm getting so excited over this one that I may not be able to wait Besides, at $150-200 this is really pretty reasonable. It will probably come down to what titles they launch with, if there's more than 2-3 that I really want I'll definitely get one.

Actually, behavior wise, Nintendo was the high-school bully back in the day before Sony fucked them in the ass. They got fined for unfair competition practices, IIRC. Don't know if Sony has behaved in a similar fashion, asides from using their deep pockets to screw everyone over as corporations are wont to do.Darth Wong wrote:It's good to see the high-school bullies get their teeth kicked in now and then. Of course they were. I have no illusions about admirable companies, but at any given time you have an underdog and a bully, and right now Nintendo is the underdog.Vympel wrote:Actually, behavior wise, Nintendo was the high-school bully back in the day before Sony fucked them in the ass. There's been a lot of justified balking at the outrageous price of the PS3 being proposed- but is the Wii really a good buy for the increase in capability being provided? Observe:

2002 Mario Sunshine. 2006 Mario Galaxy. If you look hard, there's a slight difference.
Of course, if the games are actually fun and they make enough to sustain the system, maybe it won't matter.

I don't get the impression that the fun factor of this particular toy is going to be well-reflected in static screenshots.

And Red Steel, even in it's early form, looks significantly better then any GC title.is the Wii really a good buy for the increase in capability being provided?
Not that it really matters, since Nintendo isn't planning on being competetive graphics-wise; it relies on the other innovations the console has.

Didn't see that one coming!Zelda information:
- NO SWINGING THE CONTROLLER for the sword, you just press a button. There are some cases where you will swing though. Reason = you’ll get tired too fast
No, I obviously didn't know what I was talking about at all. The entire "move the controller to do stuff" schtick sounds really cool until you think about it for more than two seconds. It is in general not practical to actually swing your arm to swing a sword when playing a game. As I said, you get kind of tired. But hey, if they actually make the thing properly, requiring genuine little effort to play the game for a reasonable period of time, I'll happily concede the issue (and, when I see shitloads of games taking advantage, as opposed to a few, I'll concede that, too). But I had no illusions about how stupid it would be to use an exact emulation of physical movement as a control system. That Red Steel's control system is currently by all reports shit is not particularly encouraging- they can only hope to fix it by fourth quarter, which should be well within their capability.

Course not, the fun aspect is seperate- considering it's apparently not significantly better than the Gamecube from the point of view of how "advanced" it is, the start-up price difference seems questionable. It's probably all reflected in the online capabilities and the controller (though the Gamecube did have latent online capabilties that were never developed due to lack of interest).Darth Wong wrote:I don't get the impression that the fun factor of this particular toy is going to be well-reflected in static screenshots.
EDIT: added comparison screenshot, me stupid.

Nintendo backstabbed Sony back in the day - the abotive CD-ROM attachment for the SNES was a joint venture between the two companies. Nintendo pulled out at the last minute - leaving Sony with the beginnings of the PlayStation 1.Vympel wrote:Actually, behavior wise, Nintendo was the high-school bully back in the day before Sony fucked them in the ass. From what I've heard, Red Steel was the only game which had shitty controls, so it would seem that it is the fault of Ubisoft rather than something inherent in the Wiiwiimote.Vympel wrote:That Red Steel's control system is currently by all reports shit is not particularly encouraging- they can only hope to fix it by fourth quarter, which should be well within their capability.
And a game that makes you tired very quickly is a bad idea. I don't think we'll be seeing many of those because (and I really can't stress this enough) game designers generally aren't idiots. I actually expected that the Wiiwiimote would not be used much for normal sword-combat in Zelda: TP, for that very reason; it is far too long and action-oriented a game to make you tired from just ten minutes or so of battle (even though that would actually be quite realistic ).

Not to mention there's more to graphical and performace increase than simply polygon count and lighting. It's not like Mario needs more detail on his body than he currently has.Darth Wong wrote:I don't get the impression that the fun factor of this particular toy is going to be well-reflected in static screenshots.
