Cell Phone With MP3 Ringtones?
I'm in the market for a new cell. I really only care about one thing: the ability to take a sound file from my computer and set it as the ringtone. No fees, no bullshit, no middlemen. Does such a product exist?

Yes - most mp3 playing phones this ability, though I'm not really convinced the results are that good as a form of call awareness. Where do you live?
Edit - A quick search on GSMArena showed 355 phones with mp3 playing ability, but only a small fraction of these are available in the states. Of course in the states some CDMA phones also have this ability, so...

Yes. My cell is a GSM-900 from Motorola, and its polyphonic ringtones are MP3 files. Pretty much every cell manufacturer has you buy the USB cable seperately, though, sometimes with the transfer software bundled seperately on top of that....so expect to pay $50 or so for the ability to transfer your own MP3s to your cell phone. I didn't think it was worth the cost, but...

My Motorola E815 has the ability, but Verizon disabled it (they want you to pay for ringtones, of course).
But I re-enabled it.

My Cingular V551 plays mp3's, but....
The early firmware/flex (the flex is the GUI) versions on the moto V551 had 'issues' with speaker volume and battery life, but after haunting motomodders.net, I not only was able to find the program needed to flash the firmware to the latest version (thus solving the 'issues'), but I got this really cool custom flex put together by a member of the motomodders forums.
Not only that, but I found a java loader and was able to load a shitload of games on the phone that some helpful soul posted in the forum.
After all of that, I went from feeling 'meh' about the Moto and using my Samsung x427m exclusively to just loving the V551 and the added functionality and bugfixes that came with the updating and java loader.

From what I've seen, almost all US carriers have that 'nickel and dime the customer to death' mentality, but IMHO Verizon is the worst.Shadowhawk wrote:My Motorola E815 has the ability, but Verizon disabled it (they want you to pay for ringtones, of course).

Fuck them and that bullshit.
I may have had to put up with it years ago, but thanks to the Intarweb, I can reenable the built in functionality in my phone without paying out the ass to do so.

With current mobiles, it more depends on what your carrier wants than the capability of the mobile. You've got to check if they allow the functionality, or disabled it to force you pay for ringtones.
