Given DirectX 10, Halo 2 for PC(inhouse port this time, so no Gearbox bullshit), Live Anywere, etc you might get grumbling but in a few years it'll be mainstream.

If for no other reason you will not be able to buy any pre-made PCs with WinXP, it'll be Vista only.

Regular people often don't adopt new OSs quickly anyway, and I'm certainly not going to get it until the first round of patches. I know many, many sad, misguided people who use 98se. :S

Well, I won't be getting it until my new PC, which is some way off anyway. By then, I assume DX10 will be the standard for gaming (and I'll have the hardware for it), so hopefully there won't be any major hiccups.

Regular people get their OS in the box their PC comes in. Many of them do not even know what version it is. Some of them think that Office is their operating system.

Remember that to the vast majority of PC owners, anyone who knows how it works at all, let alone can actually put one together themselves, is probably a witch.

Yeah, because I was talking about new PC purchases... in FANTASYLAND. How can you 'adopt' an OS without a computer? The fact remains that there are STILL people using patched up 2000 and 98SE - the ignorance you mention prevents many people from 'risking' their setup that's 'just so' by updating. There is RESISTANCE TO CHANGE.

I mean, I've never met average computer users, right? It's not my fucking job or anything, hey?

Wasn't 2000 the version that had the least amount of bugs/patches/crap?

I've got quite a few customers who still use Win2000, and it actually seems to have less problems than their XP machines.

Microsoft software is becoming increasingly stable and usable on the 1st release. The biggest issue is drivers, which can take years to become stable on new OSs

When I did my last major component upgrade, I first installed XP Home (legit, mind you

), all of the major apps that I use, patched everything to be totally up to date, and then ghosted it to a DVD.

Then I wiped the drive, installed Win2kSP4, installed all of the major apps that I use, patched everything to be totally up to date, and then ghosted it to a DVD.

Of course I wound up restoring the Ghost DVD of WinXP, but I like the idea of having a choice between Win2k or WinXP ready to go after a simple 30 minute restore session.
It's nice to have those discs because if I FUBAR things up while screwing around with Linux or some other alternative OS, I'm not in for a four hour session of reinstalling everything in order to be back where I was.

As far as Vista goes, I'm waiting until either SP1 is released or a new laptop that I'd buy (I build my own desktop machines) comes with it preinstalled.

Most people see computers as a useful tool, finely balanced on the edge of collapse. Regular users - ie, not computer people - seldom enjoy updating ANYTHING, since they have the terrible fear of their comfort zone disappering. Hence crazy people with old setups, bad setups, no firewall, etc...

The general computing populace pisses me off a lot, and I don't even work at a support desk (thank Cthulhu). The other day, someone wanted me to listen to a song they'd just ripped and after the frustratingly slow transfer over MSN, I find it's a WMA file. Great. Shit quality and won't play in amaroK anyway. The girl still used that shite WMP10 and probably would draw a blank if I mentioned bitrates, compression formats and how proprietary file systems suck shit, letalone how to setup a firewall or update the PC properly.

I like how another girl on a forum I knew was having problems with her PC, so I stepped in and asked what OS she was using. She didn't know. I asked if the Microsoft Windows logo came up when the PC got switched on, and she said yes. "Great, which version is it?". She couldn't tell me and then got in a strop when I told her it was blatantly obvious if you have eyes and can see the boot sequence. I told her to stuff off in the end when she not only wouldn't help me with the most basic questions, but started getting all high and mighty as if knowing what OS you use is for fucking Ph.D owners.

When Vista comes out, there are going to be whole new waves of this kind of stupid. Frankly, I'm glad my main OS (Ubuntu) requires basic computing knowledge just to install. I sharn't be offering help for Vista given it'll be my gaming platform.

It's a shame that the increasing popularity of OSs like Linux means there's a whole new tribe of clueless morons for whom looking at an 'about' dialog is ritual sorcery. As Xon says, hopefully Vista will be more stable and more accessable from launch.

I upgraded to Windows 98 SE because I was 12 and Microsoft told me I had to upgrade to get 'internet connection sharing' and I needed that for my network, and I was smart enough to know that Windows ME = BAD.

I always did wonder why the 98 SE PC had more problems than the 98 one though

Yeah, but think of it like this. Atleast most of the call centers are overseas now, so you won't have to deal with morons like that over the phone. (Main reason why I absolutely refuse to work in tech support.) I don't mind dealing with customers face to face because then I can physically show them what they did wrong, and show them how to fix it on their own. If it wasn't for stupid people, we wouldn't be making a dime.
