Replacement Console
OK, with all the back and forth about the Wii, PS3 and X Box I have to ask this question.
I'm planning on giving my daughter my PS 2 in a few months and wanted to replace it with a spanking brand new generation console.
Do I go for the XBox which has games like HALO (Which I've never played) or the Wii that has this new orgasmic joystick or do I remain faithful to Sony and get a PS3?
Frankly unless the PS3 can blow me and make a mean sandwhich on top of giving me great games I think I'll pass on a $600 price tag. I rarely play my PS2 as it is and usually only with my daughter. So, it looks like its really between the Wii and the XBox. Any thoughts between these two? Anyone currently own an XBox 360 and can share? Are there certain games I'll be frozen out of by purchasing one or the other? I love GTA series and Final Fantasy games for example will I be able to get them for the X-Box or Wii?

Re: Replacement Console
Depends on what Genres you like. Honestly, I prefer the PS2 over any other systems right now by the diversity of games... but lesse.Stravo wrote:OK, with all the back and forth about the Wii, PS3 and X Box I have to ask this question.

If you want PC-styled games, primarilly first person and third person action, and some RPGs, a 360 seems like a good choice. It's got good graphics and such, with new titles coming out next year. Pretty much the continuation of current trends.
Wii, I'm not so sure on. It's aiming for 'odd' gameplay, like minigames and a few point-click action things. It has some interesting potential, but so little is concretely known aside from a handful of titles, that it's a matter of genre preference. Like cute? Wii is cute.
Huh? The Wii launch titles I've seen are fighting games, driving games, shooters and adventure games. Not this vague 'point and click' 'cute' shit. There's nothing 'odd' about Excite Truck and Metroid.
Stravo, you've got the luxury of the 360 already being out: go and check out the games that're out (I have no idea) and ask questions about specific games here. There isn't going to be concrete info on Wii stuff for months, so if you find games you like on 360 buy one. If you're not sure, wait a bit.

Do you like console FPS? Buy XBox.Stravo wrote:OK, with all the back and forth about the Wii, PS3 and X Box I have to ask this question.

Do you like racing sims? Both PS3 and XBox will suit you.
RPGs? PS3.
Japanese games? PS3 or Wii.
Classics and new game types + lower price? Wii.
I'd get the Wii personally, especially considering the extremely high price of the PS3.
You won't be getting Final Fantasy games on the XBox 360, unless you count the port of Final Fantasy XI from the PC, which isn't that good. PS3 will have several Final Fantasy XIII games, and Wii will have Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles 2 (supposedly with a much deeper story than the original and online co-op, according to Square Enix) and Dragon Quest Swords (well, Dragon Quest is close to Final Fantasy...same makers, both are RPGs ).
Wii will also open up the GameCube's back library as well as SNES, N64, NES, Genesis, and TurboGrafix, since you don't have a GameCube. PS3 will let you keep playing PS2 games. XBox 360...will let you play *some* XBox games.

I'd go with the Wii, especially considering that your daughter would want to play video games with you and Nintendo tends to cater to that demographic.
I know the Wii is my first next-gen, but that's because I'm a Zelda whore Not to mention the aforementioned classic games.

Word has it the Ubisoft reps turned the sensitivity up all the way for the Red Steel demos. Obviously, when you own the game, you can adjust the senstivity yourself, just like any other FPS.mizuno wrote:I hear people at e3 generally had negative reactions to Red Steel and trouble figuring out zelda's bow and arrow system. Red Steel, yes. The sensitivity was WAY too low.mizuno wrote:I hear people at e3 generally had negative reactions to Red Steel and trouble figuring out zelda's bow and arrow system. Zelda? Heck no, whoever told you that is an idiot. I pulled off a series of five headshots in a row within ten seconds of pulling out the bow and arrow for the first time.
Zelda was *perfect*. I am buying the Wii version over the GameCube version, no doubts at all.

On the topic of what console to buy- the Wii is going to be priced quite affordably. You'll probably be able to get one and an Xbox 360 for the same price as a PS3.

Yeah I heard the controls on RS were sluggish. As for zelda.. the people I heard it from are not idiots, the caveat was that they had stood in line for hours and only had a few minutes to try it out so they were under a ton of pressure. It likely would have been easier to use if instead they were in the comfort of their living room and had some time to get the hang of it. In any case it is widely reported that the wii has a learning curve for people who grew up using controllers, the only games that anyone was able to pick up instantly were the minigames like the tennis one where the console automatically moves you to the ball so all you have to do is swing.. The developers still need a while to figure out how to properly use the wii controller so for now I'll wait and see.Praxis wrote:Red Steel, yes. The sensitivity was WAY too low.

Really? Because on several forums, I have not seen this widely reported (in fact, everyone has said it was intuitive), and I waited in line for several hours and was pulling off headshots. I also filmed several others playing for the first time as well if you want to watch someone's first shots using the controller. In any case it is widely reported that the wii has a learning curve for people who grew up using controllers
I'm actually curious because I have yet to see one person say Zelda had a learning curve...

lol, well here's the vid anyway. I'll get a QuickTime and a lower bandwidth version up soon too (I apologize for the ridiculous filesize, it's at a very high bitrate).

When you see the Twilight Princess videos, remember that's someone playing for the first time. The bridge scene (the first Twilight Princess clip in there) is the first time you pull out the bow and arrow. You'll see how quickly he gets the hang of it. He misses several shots, then after he hits someone, his accuracy rapidly improves visibly onscreen and he gets four kills without missing a shot.
I did the same thing but to a larger degree. I missed my first three or four shots completely, then I got a headshot and I kept getting them Unfortunately, it's somewhat difficult to film yourself when you're holding a controller, so I just filmed the guy in front of me.

Since you stated that you rarely play your PS2 and when you do its usually with your daughter the Wii is probably the perfect system.
I don't think I've ever played any game as much with my friends as I have Super Smash Bros. and Mario Kart line of games. Nintendo imho has the best line of of party games, where the game is best played with a friend or 5.

Re: Replacement Console
From what I recall, Final Fantasy was pretty much PS/PS2 exclusive (barring ports to the PC). I don't recall any X-box or Nintendo ports of an FF game.Stravo wrote:I love GTA series and Final Fantasy games for example will I be able to get them for the X-Box or Wii?
As far as GTA, if they do what they did for III, VC, and SA, the PS3 gets first crack but eventually there will be a 360 (and PC) port.
As to which to buy, I honestly can't tell you. Right now only the 360 has enough known about it (and enough games released) to make a good judgement AFAIK (unless I've missed something on the Wii).

Re: Replacement Console
GTA is now a non console exclusive, and will be released for both PS3 and X360 at the same date, and the X360 gets exclusive Live content.RogueIce wrote:From what I recall, Final Fantasy was pretty much PS/PS2 exclusive (barring ports to the PC). Depends.
For me the Wii is a nice console, but I remain skeptical about the amount of developers it'll actually get, more so about the amount that will actually use things like the new controller. You can get Nintendo's back catalogue though, which is something to consider.
The 360 I won't be getting unless they actually release games on it that I care about. I was browsing through my local games shop the other day and saw maybe two that I'd consider playing, and both of those were already on PC.
The PS3 I'm expecting to have the most games I actually want to play (thats how it was for the PS2 anyway), so despite the cost its likely to be my first buy.

Personally i'm tempted to just stick with my PS2 and use my PC for the next-gen games.
PS2 is still getting the next Smackdown game, the next Tony Hawk and God of War 2, which IIRC are going to be released late this year which IIRC is also around the same time as the PS3.
When the PS3 comes out i don't think they'll be the big leap in gameplay that there was between the PS1 and PS2, just a big graphics increase. Plus i'm expecting the price of PS2 games to drop once the PS3 comes out.
