Utility of Jedi telekinesis

Post by Raxmei »

Exactly how useful is telekinesis? Canon and official evidence provides a large spread of uses.

The first use that I recall was in The Empire Strikes Back. Luke uses the force to retrieve his lightsaber. This act was difficult, but it was a stressful situation.

Later on in the same film, Vader hurls large objects at Luke. It didn't seem that hard to do.

A bit before that, Yoda lifts up an X-wing. He had trouble doing it, but then he's moving a very large object.

I don't remember anything important happening in RotJ.

When Yoda matched up with Dooku, he was able to move the large stone objects with some effort, but it didn't seem to be as much trouble as in tESB.

In one of the books, Luke is able to build and then later destroy a large building using just the force. That's pretty impressive. But then he didn't have anything much to distract him while he was doing it.

In what I think is a different book, Luke thinks he can rip hull plates off of warships. That's a large target, and in combat conditions. More impressive still. On the matter of telekinesis, Luke might be more powerful than Yoda.

In what I'm almost certain is a different book, Kyp Durron (sp?) grabs a large fighter from out of the center of a gas giant. Of course, Mr. Durron was also portrayed as a very powerful force user.

So basically, telekinesis is really cool and useful, but only if you use a really powerful Jedi.

Any thoughts?

Telekinesis has been used on a smaller scale to heat up a region of air to create a light. I don't remember if it involved macroscopic motion or some kind of Jedi Heisenberg compensator ability.

And this alone is a good reason to pretend the EU never existed, Zahn or no.

It was also used to manipulate the throw of a die in TPM. So if you're a jedi in Vegas you've got that going for you.

No, that is good reason not to destroy KJA's works right away.
I liked that.

There are two main schools of thought on this matter. The one is that telekinesis is extraordinarily powerful and does not require much power. That is the one I believe in, for reasons I will discuss below. The second is that telekinesis is either highly taxing or of limited utility. Proponents of this theory tend to believe that most of the powers of the Jedi are actually derived from physical training and careful discipline.

I believe in the first theory for several reasons.

1. We have seen, in the EU, that Jedi are capable of manipulating VERY small things. They can even suck the air from a small area, or form shields around themselves to protect them from small things like insects. They can even craft mists and fog into shapes that they can control and manipulate.
2. We have seen, in the EU, characters pick up enormous objects, including plucking massive trees from the ground and hurling them with great force. We have also seen Jedi levitate HUGE objects for extended periods of time, and manipulate them with some degree of control.
3. We have seen Jedi levitate both themselves and other people, though by all accounts this is an enormously taxing behavior and can only be performed for a brief period of time.

The movies also tend to support this theory about the Jedi. In the movies, we have seen Jedi levitate very large objects and manipulate fine controls on their lightsabers (Obi-Wan never actually touches the activation stud on Qui-Gon's lightsaber when he strikes down Darth Maul). We have seen the Jedi move VERY quickly (ref. TPM), and we have seen Jedi control the movements of a cast die. None of these behaviors seemed to be especially taxing on them, although all of them required training in order to use.

Well what you forget to mention about mr uber jedi Kyp is that he had Exar Kun lending a hand at this point. He's still an overpowered cunt but this time it wasn't just him.

COMPLETELY irrelevent. The power was also demonstrated by Anakin Solo and Tahiri Veila. Also note that Tahiri is still a mere apprentice at this point. She was not even a Jedi Knight when she demonstrated that power. Lord whatshisname from Rebel Dream also demonstrated such power, but he was more powerful than even Master Skywalker, so I will exclude him from this study.

Lord Nyax, he was cool, too bad they killed him off, he should have been let loose on a Vong worldship or something.

That was the one thing that got me. Allston had everything going, and I am sure the supposed 'council' at lucasfilms made this decision. Nyax is killing all of the Vong, and what do Luke, Mara and Tahiri do? Jump in and fight...Nyax!!!

They had to use the Yuuzhan Vong. In spite of the Yuuzhan Vong's own evilness, Nyax was the greater threat. The only way they would even stand a chance against Nyax would be if he was distracted, and they attempted to use the Yuuzhan Vong as just that distraction.
