For an interesting read, take a look at Herman Kahn's On Thermonuclear War - he does some extrapolation in it based on the "higher, faster" route the USAF was taking before the switch to missile-based deterrance. And his predications are nowhere near what happened.

OTOH, extrapolation of what computers could do based on some of the 1950s designs and growth were wildly inaccurate - on the conservative side.

It's probably not a very accurate representation of actual extrapolation, but I asked him if he thought we'll have flying cars and fusion power in 50 years, too. You know what he said? That we've had flying cars in the form of private airplanes since 1910 and that fusion power probably will be commercially available in ten years
