On the serious side, what the hell is up with "Knife Control"? How will they cook? Will people start being stabbed with sporks?By MIKE SULLIVAN

THIS five-foot martial arts sword capable of beheading a man was recovered by shocked cops in a house raid.
The terrifying Batleth weapon is identical to one wielded by Klingon aliens in the Star Trek sci-fi films.
Officers seized the three-handled sword — which has huge pointed blades at either end — at a home in Gloucester.
It was shown yesterday at the start of a five-week national knife amnesty. Cops hope 30,000 blades will be handed in, with owners free from prosecution.
Local Insp Mac McGarry wielded the sword, which he said had been sharpened to kill.
He said: “It is a particularly nasty weapon which could easily take someone’s head off.”
Home Office Minister Vernon Coaker launched the amnesty in St John’s Wood, North West London. He said: “We are determined to get the scourge of knife crime off our streets.”
But Victims of Crime campaigner Norman Brennan, a serving cop, branded the initiative a “futile PR stunt”.
He said: “It is likely to be supported by the law-abiding public and not those who carry knives for criminal activity.
“Knife crime will only get worse if we don’t introduce a five-year mandatory sentence for anyone carrying a knife.”
THE Queen’s grocer Fortnum & Mason was fined £2,000 by Horseferry Road Magistrates in London for selling a knife to a child under 16.

The whole knife amnesty idea is stupid anyway since the only people who will hand in knives by default are law-abiding citizens. Criminals don't obey the law, that's why they're criminals.

How can you conceal a giant, impractical klingon bat'leth anyway? If someone's running around with that, they're not committing muggings by the virtue of being extremely, extremely conspicuous.Zed Snardbody wrote:What is an illicit knife? In the UK you can’t carry a blade around without good reason (good reason being you need it for you job, some DIY you’re doing or something like that) if you do need one you can’t carry it in your pocket, on your hip or anywhere that’s easy to grab, but instead should have it in bag, the back of your car or something like that.
Your are obviously allowed knives in the kitchen, the garage and so forth just not on the street, I for one am totally in favour of these laws. Nobody needs to carry an easily accessible knife on the street. Even if you are a ‘law abiding’ citizen and only carry a blade ‘for protection’ we all run the risk of getting into violent situations and in any confrontation the presence of a knife in any violent situation makes death and serious injury so much more likely.

So if I carry a knife or even a gun what good will that do me? The mugger will likely have their weapon drawn making any attempt of mine to fight foolish, my best bet is to run failing that give em my wallet and then run, I’m not gonna risk my life just for £20 and a few cards.Knife wrote:Get mugged if you're not a fast runner apperently.Jadeite wrote:So what do you do if you're attacked by someone?

Nobody needs an easily accessible knife? Bullshit. A knife is a simple and highly effective tool. People shouldn't be relegated to keeping the thing in unhandy locations because of nanny state fears.Plekhanov wrote:In the UK you can’t carry a blade around without good reason (good reason being you need it for you job, some DIY you’re doing or something like that) if you do need one you can’t carry it in your pocket, on your hip or anywhere that’s easy to grab, but instead should have it in bag, the back of your car or something like that.

A knife is not a versatile tool. A leatherman, that's a versatile tool, and it can double as a close combat weapon if you absolutely must.
This persistant delusion that, upon having a firearm levelled at you, you will somehow draw your own weapon and defeat the attacker so fast he is unable to squeeze his trigger truly astounds me. As does any American calling any other country a 'nanny state' when their own government is protecting them from the horrors of breasts, monitoring their phone calls, and working to protect them from the evils of real sex-ed.

that is where guile and deception come in. make the attacker think you are reaching for your wallet but instead present a gun and shoot their ass.Plekhanov wrote:So if I carry a knife or even a gun what good will that do me? seriously though it is a silly law. by going apeshit with this weapons control they are making it easier for the criminals to find defenseless victims. Here in Texas where there is a concealed carry law, muggers gotta think twice about who they are going to rob. Most robbery victims these days are drunks, because they are super easy.

Because not every situation along these lines are the same, not every mugging could have been stopped by a weapon of any sort, nor could every mugging be stopped by running fast. It never hurts to have options.Plekhanov wrote: So if I carry a knife or even a gun what good will that do me? And not every angsty twat who thinks I looked at him funny/his bird is rational enough not to try to stab me for my troubles, on balance I think the fewer idiots there are out carrying lethal weapons the better.Uraniun235 wrote:Not every attacker is rational enough to stop at robbery.
Besides as I pointed out in a mugging type situation in all likelihood the muggers weapon will be drawn, if I carried mine obviously would not so it wouldn’t do me much good anyway.

There are countless possible uses for a knife which are completely legitimate. In places like Montana (the more rural areas) the usefulness of a knife becomes even more apparent. The simple bucknife works wonders.

So... All these things that can be done with scissors. Even the scissors on my swiss army knife. Or a good ol' fashioned leatherman. Which can do more jobs, because it's a leatherman, and if a leatherman can't do it you need an industrial grade laser and superglue.Alyeska wrote:How about being able to cut through absurd amounts of packaging of items you have bought. A great many leathermans would be quite illegal in the UK given blade length.
A leatherman is a very nice tool. I need to get myself a better one then the fake leatherman I have.
