Help - a computer problem

Post by Johonebesus »

For the past couple of days, when I try do download something in IE, instead of giving me the "Save As" box it starts opening the file. To save it I have to right-click and save as. I think I might have accidently hit the "don't ask again" box. I cannot find a way to bring it back. Can anyone help?

And if anyone is wondering (which you probably aren't) the only reason it's a problem is because I am trying to download a huge zip file that will take ~18hrs, and I would like to use Smartdownload so I can save it a bit at a time, but it doesn't work with Netscape 7 and now it won't work IE because the browser will not automatically start downloading anymore. :x

But Mozilla doesn't accelerate downloads. He should go with Download Accelerator, and get Mozilla while he's at it.

Here's GetRight's problem: It installs one of the commercial spyware packages onto your computer, and if you use a program like AdAware to nuke it, the program itself will not work anymore.

All I really want to do is get IE to ask me what to do again instead of automatically opening files. I don't really want some big program running in the background. I'm happy with what I had, if it would just work. If no-one can help with that, then I guess I will try some other program. Does this Download Accelerator allow for recovery of partial downloads, if the connection is broken or the computer is shut down?

Of course, what I really want to know is how come Netscape's Smartdownload won't work with Netscape Communicator anymore. I hate it when they don't make software backwards compatable. I paid over a thousand dollars for this computer, I should damn well be able to play Doom on it.

Yes, and yes. You can also set Download Accelerator to prompt you which way you wish to download a file - the normal way, or accelerated/resume.

DAP does take up some system resources, but you don't have to have it running all the time if you don't want to.

Getting back on topic here...

open up either Windows Explorer or My Computer. Click on Tools and select Folder options. Click the File Types tab. Hit Z and scroll down till you see zip. Double-click on it, and click on the advanced button. Check the box that says "Confirm file download" or whatever its called. You'll have to do this for whatever file-type you chose to ignore the save-as prompt for. I just used ZIP as a quick example since its the most commonly used compression format on the web.
