Hitting things in hyperspace destoying you and leaving the target intact, at least in more than one source. On the other hand, we have no information on what happens when you are jumping TO hyperspace and hit somthing. It probably has some unusual effects, depending on exactly how close to entering hyperspace you are. Maybe it treats the mass of the ship like it had been converted into energy, along with all its contents, or maybe it just slams the ship into it's target at some fraction of C.

I recall that the Executor took 3 ISDs ramming it upon emergence from hyperspace during the siege of Yavin... I think the Executor's shields took in all the damage though.

The Imperials rammed their own ships. I doubt that they were ISDs.

It was at the Battle of Hoth actually, and the ships in question were indeed ISDs. The impacts knocked down the Executor's shields for a time, but did not inflict structural damage.

Actually, it was during the final rebel evacuation from Yavin, as the Mon Calamari formally joined the alliance, and shortly after Executor was cristened as such formally after Darth Vader used it to massacare a rebel outpost.

Not sure which comic it was, Marvel 20's or so I think

Really? I was under the impression that it happened as the Executor's squadron was jumping into the Hoth system, and Ozzel's botched insertion causes several destroyers to jump in off course and hit the command ship (making Vader's case for killing him rather more understandable).

Erm.. no. It was Admiral Griff I think who miscalculated and rammed his ships into the Executor, which survived without a scratched.

Well then, I was mistaken. Thanks for clarifying.

I was under the impression that the 'leap' to hyperspace is an optical illusion.

Stark wrote:You know, hyper-ramming might not even work. It does crazy things to the ships mass, and it's possible striking something in hyperspace kills YOU and does SHIT ALL to the object you hit.
Stark may well be right about the effects of the participants in hyperspace-to-normal collisions: the fact that hyperdrive technology is not used prolifically for weapons applications (unmanned hyperspace missiles, ramships, etc) should, in itself, make it obvious enough that it is incapable and therefore unsuitable for the job!

I am aware of Galaxy Gun, but note that the destructive effects have nothing to do with the fact that the projectile is capable of hyperspace travel.

Also, I doubt that it's merely "software safeties" that inhibit the engagement of hyperdrives within gravity wells, otherwise Interdictor cruisers would be pretty useless against any ships prepared for such situations (if it were merely "software safeties", any pirate, rebel or military ship would certainly be able to optionally disengage aforementioned safeties.

Honestly, if hyper-ramming was so nifty, then accidentally passing through a star or striking a planet would be a huge cataclysm, not simply dumb and fatal to the ship involved. Clearly, you can do that (and die) without seriously inconvieniencing other people.

According to Dr Saxton's hyperspace collisions section, as an object's energy decreases, its speed increases; thus, an object which is travelling very fast in hyperspace will have very little energy to impart in a collision. During the jump to hyperspace, we see ships accelerate to relativistic velocities before the actual shift to superluminal speeds; if you want to seriously damage an enemy with ramship tactics, don't bother jumping to hyperspace; instead, simply have it accelerate suddenly into the enemy ship. It will have far more energy than if it were travelling very quickly.
A Government founded upon justice, and recognizing the equal rights of all men; claiming higher authority for existence, or sanction for its laws, that nature, reason, and the regularly ascertained will of the people; steadily refusing to put its sword and purse in the service of any religious creed or family is a standing offense to most of the Governments of the world, and to some narrow and bigoted people among ourselves.
