Not to mention A Kind of Magic, the Highlander Soundtrack. As well as A Night at the Opera, with Bohemian Rhapsody. Also, AC/DC was at its peak in the 80s. Not to mention Guns 'n Roses. Though I'm not quite sure what Orange means by 'taste forgot'.

Edit: And kinda surprising this isn't in AMP. . .

Bohemian Rhapsody was the 70's. I'd put forward Motorhead, Iron Maiden & George Harrison - 'I got my mind set on you' is great. Plus let us not forget Madness!

The Talking Heads!
Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you? (Walt Whitman)

"We cross our bridges when we come to them and burn them behind us, with nothing to show for our progress except a memory of the smell of smoke, and a presumption that once our eyes watered." (Tom Stoppard)

Still here I carry my old delicious burdens/I carry them, men and women, I carry them with me wherever I go/I swear it is impossible for me to get rid of them/I am fill'd with them, and I will fill them in return. (Whitman)

I echo A-Ha "Take on Me" and I add:

Crowded House - Don't Dream It's Over

Huey Lewis & the News - The Power of Love

John Farnham - You're the Voice

Foreigner - I Want To Know What Love Is

Alphaville - Forever Young

Michael Jackson - Beat It

Eurythmics - Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This)

A few Swedish ones:

Europe - The Final Countdown

Roxette - It Must Have Been Love

And a few nostalgic ones from the movies/television:

Ray Parker Jr. - Ghostbusters

Fame (TV series version. Somehow that's something that keeps popping up whenever I think about the 80s even if I was quite young).

That's them for now.

The lack of Billy Idol, Bangles, Air Supply, Oingo Boingo and Loverboy in this thread disturbs me.

Also, no Best Music of the 80s list on a Sci-Fi board would be complete without the entire Transformers: The Movie soundtrack.

For some reason I've always loved that song that plays at the end of The Breakfast Club, too.

Oh, and no 80s list is complete without Video Killed the Radio Star, Safety Dance, or Whip It.

Some great stuff in the 80's. Michael Jackson hit his peak, and pretty much all the best pop came around then. Some good electronica, like Loverboy and Depeche Mode. AC/DC got to their peak, Aerosmith reformed, and GNR came to be. But most of all, IMO, it was Van Halen. :D

It's Raining Blood! From the lacerated sky! Bleeding its horror! Creating my structure, now I shall reign in blood!

Slayer - Reign in Blood, 1986.

Metallica - Ride the Lightning, 1984, Master of Puppets, 1986.

Black Sabbath - Heaven and Hell, 1980, Born Again, 1983,

Michael Jackson's Thriller and Bad were some of the first albums I heard, they're still great, no matter how weird he is.

Hit Me with your best shot, Love is a battlefield, Sex is a weapon, Fire adn Ice, I need a lover (who wwon't drive me crazy), Hell is for children- P. Benatar (how can a woman make a 30 year carreer out of songs about break ups, and abuse, and still be married to the same guy since 1975?)

again, the Police (they were a big influence on the rest of the decade)

of course the seminal event of the 1980's was Wierd Al.

well considering I can't fuckin stand Madonna, Micheal Jackson, or any of those teeny pop premanufactured girl/boy bands due to overplay when I was a teenager.... (this is like how parents hate the doors/pink floyd after the first consecutive hours of the teens playing them)

Having a flick through Media Player now:

Iron Maiden
David Bowie
AC/DC
Twisted Sister (:D)
Spinal Tap (Again, :D)
Dio (I have to stop with these ':D' bands)
Pink Floyd
Joe Satriani
Guns n' Roses
Dream Theater

Some truely awesome stuff there: although also some truely hideous (yet strangely hilarious) bits :D
