I have used both systems and I've been happy with both of them. If you are going to use your PC just for personal use, then I'd probably go with XP.

For Microsoft products they are both good.

My personal preference is for Windows 2000. However, they are pretty close.
XP has a slightly different look and feel, but underneath its pretty much 2000.

If this is for home use, go with XP.

I prefer 2000, although I heard (though I can't confirm) DirectX 9 won't support 2000.

Win2000 is better because it doesn't have obnoxious spyware built in to it. However, Microsoft will probably try to wean all of its users off Win98 and Win2000 over time by deliberately witholding important updates from the old systems. Imagine if car companies tried to pressure you into buying newer cars by refusing to manufacture spare parts for older models, and suing any aftermarket company which tried to step into the breach.
For a time, I considered sparing your wretched little planet Cybertron.
But now, you shall witnesss ... its dismemberment!

I don't think XP Pro has that sort of built-in spyware.

XP looks nice, it runs quite nicely, and on the surface its applications are quite good, BUT IT FUCKING SUCKS ASS AND I WANT MICROSHIT TO KISS MY ASS!

The fucking thing rewrote my bios and fucked up my video card. I am attempting to get this fixed and am currently using Win98 again.

Get Win2000. Its a powerful, stable, and fairly advanced operating system. Its also relatively secure and doesn't have the spyware shit.

Depend on what you want. Like Miike saod they don't make many games for Win2000 anymore because they know it's the best. They'll still support Win98 for a few more years then scrap it too.

You play games? Good! You like Old Sk00L games? How about old DOS games like Scorched Earth and Wolfenstein 3D? GOOD!!! Get Win2K! It'll play Wolf3D and Scorched Earth as well as it plays UT2K3 and Quake 3, and I've heard of uptimes that give Linux installs the heebie-jeebies (2 months anyone?) Now the Hard Part™: Watch out, you'll be collecting Holy Grails a dime a dozen before you find a Win2K disk. If you get one that works, HOLD ONTO IT LIKE GOLD!!! In fact, stick it into the nearest CD ripper and "back up" the ISO onto at least 400 disks!! Well you'll really only need the first dozen "backup" disks, but oh well... ;) :D

Did Microsoft cease production and sales of Win2000?

If you're looking for warez, I'd hang around alt.binaries.cd-images. You're not guaranteed what you're looking for, but you won't have to put up with obnoxious renamed spyware (re: the denizens of that NG would fucking kill anyone who tried that) although it depends greatly on your newsserver.

Well... This is one of the reasons why I openly advocate the pirating of any Microsoft software.

I actually prefer Windows XP over Windows 2000. I have had no problems, thoguh there is that WPA issue (annoying, but not something I'd consider spyware). I also run some older applications that tend to barf under W2K.

Two months? I don't think anyone will get the heebie-jeebies from that. I had a Linux box run for 8 months without a hitch, and not just sitting there serving files either (database server running, FTP server open to the Internet, web server, IP router, SMB server, NFS server), and it would have kept running if I didn't have to unplug it when we were re-doing the damned wiring downstairs. To keep a win2k box running without a reboot for two months, you have to ignore all of the security updates coming out of Microsoft, because each and every one of them forces you to reboot. Hope you like being hacked :)

I got Win2K of my MCP tutor. But i prefer XP, mainly coz i use my main PC as a internat platform and for gaming. My parents also use this computer ans XP is a lot easier for them to use.

On my second PC i use the 2000 professional. I do work on there and i keep it off line to avoid bastards getting a sniff of my plans.

Well, it is an almost trivial change to do.
