LCD Dead Pixel Line

I have a Viewsonic VP930b LCD and it has developed a row of dead pixels, just one row (I think). Is this a terminal problem requiring me to get service (luckily it's still under waranty), or is there something that is caused by a bad setting? I haven't changed my resolution/etc. so I doubt it, but I can hope right? I normally run it at 1280x1024 @ 60hz (the recomended setting).

Also, anyone know what might have caused this?

If it's permanent, your screen is fucked. Unplug it from the puter, then turn it on and us the OSD to see if the row is still dead. If it is, it's time for warranty claim or tears.

I wish my single pixel would turn into a row. As of now there isn't anything I can do about it.

Oh well, hope they take care of it for you with little difficulty. Dead pixels suck.

I was lucky enough to get a Samsung at the right time, and my single stuck-red pixel got me a replacement monitor and a *lifetime no dead/stuck pixel* warranty. Woot, I say.

Until this happened, this monitor has been great. No dead pixels, great for gaming, etc. In fact, between me and my family we have 4 of them and none have dead pixels (until this). Apparently it's a samsumg lcd rebranded by viewsonic.

Yeah, it's only ~9mo old, and it has a 3 year warranty

edit: Of course, with my luck, the replacement won't be dead pixel free -- it's just how things work for me

I'm pretty cynical about such things myself, but the replacement I got from Samsung is the best LCD I've ever used. It's like they save the perfect ones to give out on warranty claims or something.

Samsung's warrenty service is awesome. Mine was slightly blury in the corners, so they sent me a new one, and the delivery person both swapped the boxes, and offered to carry it up the stairs (this is a 35kg CRT). I did decline however: it was a fairly little lady, and I thought she would have had her work cut out just getting it to the end of the drive and into the van...

Unfortunately Samsung may well be the exception, rather than the rule

I've used the warranty for a 17' CRT monitor from LG and the service was pretty much the same: the monitor had a simple on/off problem, and their support service removed the old monitor and gave me a new one, no problem at all during the process. Perhaps it's a South Korean thing good warranty services...!

Ugh, and this is why I didn't go LCD when my brother did for the "Wow, it's flat!" factor. Unless you intend to part with a nice load of dosh, you get crappy blur effects, no-true blacks and dead pixels. I'm really hoping OLED tech will become better to replace LCDs soon.

Then again, I went from a monitor that wouldn't sell for a buck at the Goodwill to a 17" Sharp LCD monitor, so maybe my persepective is a little skew

. That was the best Easter ever.

The only screens out now for a decent price I'd consider are some of the Sony VAIO ones, which have amazing clarity and colour fidelity as well as true blacks. Though Apple sell good units with their hardware too (they're even working on screens that use every pixel as a camera, so you don't need a dedicated digicam in the screen frame for video conferencing).

What model of screen is it, and do they come in 21"?

A 19/20" TFT will be equivilent to a 21" CRT - The widths are measured differently, so a TFT is generally about 2" wider than it's CRT equivilent.

I've still got my trusty old CRT after 7 years, and it still looks and works as good as the day it was made. I'll probably upgrade sometime next year when SED comes out, assuming it's all it's cracked up to be.

Apparently Samsung/Viewsonic has invented self healing electronics, because this morning when I went to look up the Viewsonic warranty info, the dead line of pixels was gone...

Bizarre -- but I'll take it, and hopefully it doesn't return.

Contact them, and describe the fault as being intermittent: The main problem with my monitor was purple discouloration at the corners of the screen (not caused my magnetic fields, and degausing didn't help), and at the time I called them, and they collected my monitor, it was working okay, but they replaced it anyway.
