If you own a Mac, you should be used to disappointment on the gaming front by now.

I got my first 'blow shit up' mission, and now I want to know how you're supposed to make money being a combat character at low levels. Bandits and drones are one thing... PCs quite another.

Aye, i only can play for short spurts and racked up over 200 kills throughout the North. Was always good when we killed a member of G/IRON. What ASCN corp are you in? Look me up sometime.

Shameless plug, ASCN is a great place for both new and old players. If you are interested PM me.

You guys any good advice for Caldari players? I currently like my Merlin, but any ideas are welcome...
At least if I'll get a stable WLAN connection in my flat here in Bonn...

Out of the top of my head:

If you want to continue doing missions, train social skills (skills that help increase standings) so you can quicly get a level 2 agent (= more pay)

You could join a corp who help you getting started or even provide you with free ships and mods

You could fit a warp scrambler/disruptor and go ransom lone haulers/miners for money in a low security system

Best advice is to simply ask your question in the "EVE New Citizens Q&A" on the eve-online forum. The community is very helpfull and they probably know a lot more tips than me

Train missiles and hybrid weapons (railguns) if you're planning for the shooty shooty. You need lesser skills to be effective with missiles so it never harms to train these first (both the Kestrel frigate or the Caracal cruiser offer excellent firepower for their price)

Osprey cruiser if you like to mine

Shield tanking skills in general (armor tanking is more for Gallente/Amarr)

Basic skills like engineering and electronics (basicly the skills that increase the cpu or powergrid of your ship, making modules easier to fit). Navigation skills are handy as well (afterburners/microwarpdrives are your friend)

..but they've got Marathon... TWO! And didn't Unreal Tournament 2004 get ported recently? ;)

Seriously, hmm. How's Eve for you all? I played for all of an hour and didn't get the hang of it because it was all waypoints with little manual flying. I never got into combat either, since it was stats vs other stats...

Yeah, I already got missiles. Pretty nice... I went for the Merlin, because I initially thought to use it as a miner, too. But soon found out otherwise. Now have a Bantam for it, and think about getting a Kestrel. But the low reload times and ammunition issues with a missile-only ship worry me a bit...

This is a very odd thing to say about MMOs: aside from games like GW with quick-to-finish progress, they're ALL stats-vs-stats. At least EVE has three-dimensional tactics and a nicely flexible loadout system. I've always thought direct, traditional control in an MMO was a waste of traffic: EVE works fine with 95% of my connection full of torrents, and I still win combat because I've given orders like 'maintain 100kms' or 'orbit at 5km' so I don't stand like a wally and die. :)

Now that I've worked out that I can drop waypoints in warp, I can finally go anywhere. :)

Yeah, it's fiddly and poor. At least it's largely hotlinked and context sensitive, though: it's much better than Xs interface.

Okay, I'm goofing around again. Salvage runs are a fun way to get money if you're lucky, but I have this absolutely hilarious story.

It's about me, in a tricked out Merlin Frigate, jumped by a jerk who just got their hands on a shiny, bigger, scarier destroyer.

I was AFK at the time, on autopilot. The prick caught me in a .4 system, and I rushed back to see what was going on. He was shooting at me with /eight Neutron Blasters/, and took down my shields in ONE SALVO. I freaked out. I hit the afterburners, and pulled 800 out of there. Then I realized something.

His neutron guns had an effective range of about 1km. I had 18km railguns.

I kited the jerk, and took him down HARD. I picked up the salvage afterwards, and sold it for about a million. Not bad for day two, huh? :P

Destroyers suck. ;) A properly equipped frigate can ace a destroyer almost any day of the week.

Hmm no. A properly fitted destroyer can pop a frigate (or even tech 2). I found that out the hard way when I tought I would have no trouble in taking out a destroyer in an interceptor.

My most recent combat story was when I was heading to the last gate to get out of 0.0 when suddenly a Manticore stealth bomber uncloaks. Luckely for me, I had a 200mm rolled tungsten armor plate fitted on my inty so I could survive his first 2-3 salvos untill I popped him myself. With 20% armor left, I moved to his can to scoop the loot when suddenly a fresh, hostile interceptor warps in. With low armor and power, I panick, scoop everything I could (mostly ammo, making my cargo already before I could get to his good stuff) but he ends up scrambling me anyway. Since I was too far from the gate, there was little choice but not to fight which suprisingly went well. I even got him to 80% hull untill he flew out of my range (fast bugger) and warped away.

I went back to the can, jettissoned his tech 2 ammo to take the good (well, better) stuff (cloaking device, tech 2 cruise launcher) when suddenly 4 bad guys warped in (cruisers, frigs). I could barely escape but without the loot.

Someone skilled with appropriate skills for a destroyer, and fitted appropriately, vs. someone equally skilled with appropriate skills for virtually any other ship, fitted appropriately, will always lose. Destroyers have lots of gunslots, but insufficient CPU and defensive resilience to stand up to anything other than medium-level fittings. Sure, they've got disgusting firepower, but like battlecruisers, they reach too far and fail as a result.

The point is that most frigate class ships will be eaten for breakfast against a good destroyer pilot. But I agree that the destroeyer will get eaten by anything bigger.

I just got my destroyer. It's still using a lot of weaker small weapons, but that's good enough for me right now. My foes (that I can handle) are enemy frigates and dessies. I've got three shield extenders, and a shield booster to help combat...

hopefully there, I can stand up to any enemy frigate, and weak interceptors?

You won't even be able to HIT interceptors without a drive slower-downer thing. Sorry, it's early. :) And T2 frigates will shit all over you. You can laugh through all lvl1 missions, though, and some lvl2 if you're good/lucky. Not Human Cargo, though. That's hard.

What is with my bad luck in this game? Every time I pass through or go to lowsec, people try to kill me (usually pretty ineptly). I get a cruiser, go to a DED4 in .4 space... and get utterly pwnzored by some 2year player in an assault ship with a scrambler. GRRRR. Meanwhile Flash drives his UNARMED BADGER through lowsec constantly, and sees red, flashing guys all the time. They never attack him. lol

I just finished my trial, I'm on a full account now. I've just gotten my Caracal cruiser. 360k SP.

Current Loadout:
2 Malkuth Heavy Missle Launchers (Scourge)
3 Malkuth Assualt Launchers (Bloodclaw)
------------------------------------------------
Target Painter
Large Shield Extender
Medium Shield Booster
Passive Thermal Resist Thingy
Afterburner
------------------------------------------------
PDS
Damage Control 1

My name is Carth Ixos. So feel free to look me up, I'd like some company. I've just got my first L2 agent, so I'm doing missions for my agents and running the occaisional deadspace rank 3. I usually hang about Sinq Laison at the gallente/caldari border.

Hey Sinq Laison isn't far from me! I've stepped back a bit since the loss of my cruiser, though; I've just started, and be assed if I'm going to spend another six million outfitting another Vexor just so some random nutter can blow it up. I need another day and fifteen million to get a Brutix.... so I guess I'll be stucky trading like Flash.
