360 wi-fi question...
Ok, so I just moved to Boston, and the cable company is coming out tomorrow to setup my cable and broadband connection. However, I go the 5.0 Mbps Download/384 Kbps Upload service. Now, I'm not tech savvy, so will that be sufficient for playing my 360 online? Should I have gotten the 10.0 Mbps Download/800 Kbps Upload or higher? I couldn't find any recommendations online anywhere...

You can do fine on online gaming at 640kbps down / 90kbps up (yes, less than 1 Mbps downstream), and probably even less. Connection quality (consistent low ping and minimal dropped packets) is more important than super high speed for the best gaming experience. (Higher speeds do tend to have better connection quality, from what I've seen. Though you can have high speeds with bad quality.)Max wrote:What mbps does online gaming generally run at?

Seriusly now, its all about the length that your signal has to travel to the server (ping). Beyond that, even a basic DSL/cable line will probably be as good as a 10mbit line since the quality of the line is important. On local servers, Quake 2 had a big jump from analog modem (56k=analog=shitty connection quality) to ISDN(digital but slow, 64kbps both way), but the jump from ISDN to DSL is marginal (10 ms better ping). When I play I never see any diffrences in ping between people with 512/96kbps, 1mbps/192kbps or 2mbps/384kbps. Most games use very little bandwith. A whole day playing may download around 100MB, while when downloading I can easily get around 350MB per hour.
Speak for yourself. My AU broadband is 7mbps down, 1 mbps up. However the download quotas make are another matterStark wrote:Is this 'lolz I have teh win netzor' spam, or is this a serious question for Americans? It makes me sad for crappy AU broadband.

I have 12/9 now, in the autumn it will be upgraded to 100/100 and when the ISP releases their 1000/1000 service I will get an automtic upgrade.
And we have no quotas whatsoever.
