EA Sports Titles to cost £70 on PS3?
Got a call from a mate who read in Games TM that EA has announced that their sports titles will cost upwards of £70 in the PS3. Has anyone else heard anything about this from anywhere as I can't find anything online.
Seriously, are EA deliberately trying to sabotage their PS3 maret or is this one of the many bullshit anti-Sony rumours which are being spread.

If they plan on releasing a $130 game here in the US, they should be prepared to die. That price is just outlandish.
EA would have to have the most retarded businessmen in the world if they sell it at that price.

I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action"; who paternalistically believes he can set the timetable for another man's freedom; who lives by a mythical concept of time and who constantly advises the Negro to wait for a "more convenient season."

If this story is true, I'll eat anything you care to name.

The cost of Blu-Ray is insignificant. At its heart Blu-Ray is a CD which uses a different coloured laser, and when you consider the amouont of discs being produced the cost of manufacture per disc annot possibly be more than £1, even at its most hideous expectations. Blu-Ray discs simply cannot be that expensive.Shogoki wrote:Well, the media itself is quite expensive, but that price is just ridiculous, even when taking royalties in account, unless the price to develop a PS3 game is absolutely outrageous i dont see how this can be true.

You're thinking on the wrong lines. The costs for products on optical media come from making what goes on it. I can go and buy a hundred blank CD-Rs for a tenner, so it's not even a quid per disc. But when you talk games, the price for making a major title is incredible, easily millions of dollars for real stellar titles in the end, and that's excluding anything like marketing and the like. The PS3 is the difficult one of the bunch again in regards to what makes it tick. If programming for Cell is really that bad, then every game will demand a higher price. And that will kill Sony's dream machine before it's even out in the shops.
I'm aware of the costs for programming games, Shogoki mentioned that the media itself, i.e. Blu-Ray, was expensive, I was just pointing out that the cost of the Blu-Ray itself as a contributing factor is meaningless.

Correct, the Cartridges for the N64 cost Nintendo 25$ each according to wikipedia, since they cost 60-70 at the absolute worst, a price far greater than that for a fraction of the base cost even from Sony is ludicrous.Lost Soal wrote: The cost of Blu-Ray is insignificant. Everyone knows people won't pay that. Even the price hike to $60 per new release for the 360 elicited some concern, although it does seem to be doing fine. I might believe $70, although even then I'd be skeptical, but not 70 quid. If game companies had to charge that much because of development costs, then they wouldn't have developed the games in the first place. Besides, it's a specious argument anyway. If people were willing to pay $130 per game, that's what they would have been charging all along.

During the early days of the PS1 when it firest came to the Uk, I'm told thats how much the big games did cost then, with the PS itself costing ~£500.

That's because there was an extremely limited supply at that time, only enough to satisfy the "gotta have it" demographic who are willing to pay those prices. The PS1 was not successful in the UK until the prices came down to more reasonable levels. When I say "people won't pay" I don't mean no one anywhere will pay high prices, I mean that the mass market won't, and unless Sony's content selling a few thousand PS3's, they're constrained by the mass market.
