Oooh, they're going to license an engine and put Duke Nukem visuals on it. Stop the presses!

What, do more Quake engine?

What scares me the most is that during the whole decade there were people who still believed that it will come out.

On a "shutthefuckupyoudontknowanythingitwillcomeoutandpwz0r4ll!!!!!111shift+1!!!!" routine.

Anyone remember Team Fortress 2? There was a big hype around it a couple of years back, five? six? I dont remember. Anyways, the game looked really awesome back then. And when I last seen a screenshot about two years ago I was like "what is this crap?"

And forums on sierra server were full of guys who would bitchslap any non believer. It was like a cult, untill it was finally shut down by sierra to conserve server space. Good riddance, go play Battlefield 2.

Seriously tho, Im curious how it will play out. Right now I can imagine the "rush" of programmers at work who are threatened with losing their jobs if they dont work all around the clock. Must be fun.

Bah. I really think it is a brilliant, elaborate hoax. The name itself suggests that - 3D Realms is probably two guys at this point, who use the development budget in order to spend their days drinking champagne and snorting coke off naked women. They are just laughing at the peons, who didn't catch the brilliant play on words that is the game's very name.
I can only salute such evil. Two decades from now people will still be waiting for Duke Nukem Forever to come out, and all that they'll get will be another Manhattan Project, just to show that "Yes, yes, we are working on it. But you can't rush perfection, ya know. *snort* Aaahhh..."

I remember watching a demo video for this back when my 233MHz AMDK6 was a pretty reasonable computer (and I think it was described as 'long awaited' back then as well). It then totally slipped my mind entirely, untill now. We shall see. It would be nice if they managed to produce the first truely revolutionary and brilliant FPS since Perfect Dark.

Judging by the development time, it should take at least 8 months of constant gameplay to finish.

Did any of you play the original Duke Nukem? It was nothing to write home about. It was a completely ordinary FPS game for its era, notable only for a politically incorrect sense of humour. Duke Nukem's gravelly taunt lines and the sight of pixelated strippers in the background while you shot at monsters might have been funny in the early 90s, but they're not going to make a game a standout in 2006-2007. Assuming it's even real.

For me, Duke Nukem 3D was just fun. It felt like Quake with more built-in shit-talking, overall.

However, this is nostalgia talking - I quite honestly haven't played the game in years, and likely won't get Forever unless it truly amazes me.

Played it on my Pentium 75mhz with a whole 8 megs of RAM and 680 MB on the hard drive. I even used the BUILD engine level creator thingy to make a level (which I never completed).

I mostly enjoyed the game, but Blood (same engine) was a lot more entertaining.

I re-installed DN3D a few months back, but it just looks so bad today I can't even be bothered to get through it for the nostalgia.

Do you have any idea how many people will be eating their socks if the game actually comes out?

"When Duke Nukem Forever comes out" has been an alternative to "When Pigs Fly" for quite some time.

The original Duke Nukem was a mediocre side-scroller. It didn't become a mediocre FPS until the third game.

It occurs to me that Duke Nukem isn't a very charismatic character.
Sure he had his moment in Duke Nukem 3D years and years ago.. but today? If jocks with big guns and tacky sunglasses surrounded by naked ladies sold an FPS then we wouldn't have Half-Life 2 and it's hero, Gordon Freeman: Ubernerd.

So yeah.. why the hell are they bothering? They'd probably end up with more money re-liscencing it to "Pong Forever".

Yeah. It was the first FPS I ever played. I was 6. It is also one of my favorite FPS's. I am anxious to play this game. The Unreal Warfare engine is pretty powerful, and can pull off some impressive visuals. Plus, I loved his politically incorrect humor. One can only hope it isn't a big fuck-up, assuming it ever comes out.

dude, you need to run a Chkdsk on your mental facilities. I still have Duke3d and i still love it. Its a helluva lot of fun. Duke Nukem's taunts, bad language and sophmoric behavior made the game a top notch in my book. Also with the cool weapons and the funny ass aliens.

oh and by the way... It's Duke Nukem 3d your talking about not the original. The original Duke Nukem was a side-scroller.

too tell you the truth, i am not holding my breath on Duke Nukem Forever. Its been coming out since 1998 and i haven't seen shit yet.

Pig-men in cop uniforms, porn theatres, bad language and badly pixellated naked women in alien goo who beg you to kill them :wtf: don't make up for bad level design.
I'm not into FPSs in general, but I enjoyed the original Half-Life. DN3D just seemed like a chore from beginning to end.

Duke Nukem's strengths are in its multiplayer because of its varied weapons.

Shrink Ray.

Jetpack.

Steroids.

Holoduke.

Laser Trip Mines.

There are also great multiplayer mods out there. Me and a friend spent an entire summer of grade 10 playing. The weapons give a huge amount of tactical choices and hilarity. Shooting a shotgun in the water, the bullets cluster together and are an instant-kill. Plant a holoduke. Plop down laser trip mines on a spawn point. It was pretty damn funny.

The only problem was there's not really an accurate long ranged weapon. I remember using a pistol because there's really no long range weapon that shoots fast enough to hit a sidestepping Duke... chaingun spreads out too far, forget shotgun outside water or long range, and RPG's slow as shit.

The original Duke Nukem was actually a side scrolling shooter. :)

Duke Nukem 3D was so called because it was the third. Forever is the forth.

Me? I genuinely think it's going to be released one day, and I think I'll probably enjoy it. Duke Nukem was actually pretty advanced for the day, and I thought the level design was a million times better than Quake's. As for the engine, well, it's supposed to be heavily modified to the point of being virtually a new one (why they never made their own, when that's what they did and licenced out with the DN3D engine, I don't know...).

It's a joke, sure, but some people seem to get virtually personally offended by the lack of release. I remain vaguely optimistic about it. :)

Maybe they're just telling a parable for the Jesus story? "DNF will come sometime in the future! No no, stay faithful, he'll come! Any second now! Ha, the unbelievers will be so embarrassed when he arrives! I'll be laughing at you when DNF comes and rewards me for my faith! Um...2010, see, that's when he'll come, because look at the significance of the year! Yeah!"
