What's with all the Star Wars vs Star Trek animosity? It's just a damned movie :)

Anyway, besides my "wetware computer", I have four machines:

#1: Celeron-600 with 256MB RAM and integrated audio/video/LAN on an MSI i815 mainboard. 30GB Quantum Fireball LM hard drive. This is my file server.

#2: Celeron-1400 with 384MB RAM, GeForce2 MX400, 3Com NIC, and Hercules Game Theatre XP on an Asus i815 mainboard. 15GB Quantum Fireball LM hard drive. This is my machine.

#3: Celeron-1700 with 512MB DDR RAM, GeForce2 GTS, 3Com NIC, and integrated audio on an Asus SiS-chipset P4 mainboard. 60GB Western Digital hard drive. This is my older son Matthew's machine.

#4: Athlon T-Bird 1GHz with 512MB RAM, GeForce2MX, 3Com NIC, and SBLive on an Asus VIA KT133 mainboard. 13GB Quantum Fireball KX hard drive. This is my younger son David's machine.

Have you tried a game called Deus Ex? It's a First-Person Shooter/RPG (For a computer game), with an excellent storyline including conspiracies such as the Illuminati, and has deep characters. It is by far my favorite shooter, probably my favorite RPG. It has great replay value, with different situations depending on your actions, and 3 spiffy endings, one of which is being chosen for a 2nd Deus Ex, which I'm drooling over. It surpasses even Half-Life IMHO. Some say the speech is a little dull on the character's part, but if I were a nano-augmented android, I probably would be a little detached myself. For whatever it might amount to, I would whole-heartedly reccomend this game for your play. It'll run like a dream on those monsters you have.

BTW, you all still suck for having better computers than me! :P

Most of you have better boxes than mine; I'm a bit jealous.

Pentium III Coppermine 866
Intel i815E motherboard (OEM)
512 MB RAM (PC133; DDR wasn't readily available when I built this initially, and the i815E doesn't support it anyway)
IBM 40 GB HD (7200 RPM)
Sound Blaster Live! sound card
GeForce2 GTS (OEM)
Intel 10/100 NIC
Zip 250 drive
NEC DV-4200A DVD-ROM
Plextor 121032A CD-RW

I've been planning an upgrade of the processor, mobo, and RAM for quite some time now, though I've been holding back on a video card upgrade due to the price. As it is, I can do what I want (word processing, Photoshop, video editing, a bit of PSX emulation), so it's fine.

Damn, Mike, both your sons have better rigs than you do? If I was a father, I'd find that intolerable. :)

He's got the best sound system, though :>

Anyway:

AMD Athlon 1.3 GHz, 256 MB DDR RAM, ECS motherboard, GeForce2 MX400, 15" monitor that really needs cleaning. . . I've been staring at this monitor for the past 3 hours. Why the hell did I only just notice how dirty it is?

30 GB Hardrive, which is currently wasting about 8 GB on a currently unused installation of SuSE 7.3, since my video card needs XFree86 4.2 to run properly, and upgrading is just something I haven't bothered finding the time for. . . I'm half tempted to get SuSE 8.0 and be done with it. . .

The AMD Athlon + nVidia GeForce combo seems popular. . .

Utterly useless observation, I know, but *shrug*

EDIT: It'd be interesting to see how well that impression matches up to the actual posts on this thread - maybe my perception is skewed by the fact that I tend to notice those machines because that's the combo I have. I'm not bored enough to go check though. . .

Well its either AMD+Nvidia or Intel+Nvida :D

ATI up to this point has been pretty much lacking in power, Radeon was nice but it never quite beat Nvida, The 9700 and 9000 look VERY promising but then agian we starting to run out of games that need it, Yesterday I was crusing around and saw that a 2.8 Ghtz P4 and the 9700 where pulling 132 FPS in 1600x1200 mode in Quake III full detail and 640x480 was over 400+ and I started to question why? :D
Sure Doom III is nice but I want games that will do what q3 did when it came out
BRING EVERY SINGLE SYSTEM ON THE MARKET TO ITS KNEES PLEEDING FOR DEATH! BHWHAHAHAHH!
:D
I mean Q III by today's standereds is lacking compared with say Morrowind, But since I get 60 FPS on a system I built for less than 1k sometimes I find it hard to upgrade

Then I downloaded the Single Player Demon for Battlefield 1942, I will now be sinking 2k into a massive system upgrade somtime in the future
Like tommrow :D

Some people like 1600x1200x32bit @ 4x FSAA and anistroptic filtering with the latest games - and the Q3 engine is not exactly the most punishing of engines. We'll see how modern machines do with D3.

The R9000 is actually less powerful than the R8500, though the R9700 is currently the king of the hill.

Oh yes, and I am highly tempted to get a hardware RAID5 card (ie 3ware) and shove a few WD JB drives onto it. I won't touch RAID0, far too dangerous.

Phongn I know that why I said the 9000(IE from a Budget Standpoint which its targeted at) and 9700 however I've seen how Doom 3 Runs, At E3 the 9700 and P4 at 2.8GHTZ where keeping it running nicly enough at 1024x768 thus we need somthing like the Quake III of its time which was released to PII 400mthz and TNT2 Cards...

IE somthing that much better than anything else at the time you HAD to upgrade to get it

Yeah, but in doing that you'll take a big bite out of your revenue - economics strikes again. If only a small amount of people can even run the game, it's a Bad Thing for the publisher and developer.

And the R300 and P4/2.8 weren't even out at E3! (Heck, the P4/2.8 hasn't been released, for that matter). Maybe you were thinking of a NV25 and P4/~2GHz or something.

But sure, they might have been running it at 1024x768, but at what detail level?
