I'm using Trillian now, it supports ICQ, AIM, MSN, Yahoo, and mIRC.

Why would you want to be leashed to your computer?

You mean chat addiction?

Well, for example, had I used AIM it would've made collaborating on a group project a while ago easier.

Trillian isn't a messaging service per se, but it does combine AIM, YIM, ICQ, IRC and MSN in one pretty sweet interface.

Howbout a different question. Excluding Trillian, which is the best from the five listed: ICQ, AIM, MSNM, Yahoo, Mirc(messaging service?)?

Miranda-ICQ (miranda-icq.sourceforge.net)

Supports nearly every IM protocol now, and eats up VERY little RAM.

ICQ is annoying to deal with, I have no experience with YIM, mIRC seems to be heavily favored among the chat-room people but is not really for IMs, and MSN Messenger is by far one of the most annoying and obtrusive programs I have had to deal with outside of Real. I'd say AIM...it's actually a pretty strong program despite the ads and the AOL-icon infections it causes.

I use ICQ simply cause thats what Ive had for so long. I did use Yahoo Messenger at one time, but I dont remember if that was in parallel with ICQ or before it. Like most people Ive forgotten my ICQ password and have had to get a new account a few times.

As each version gets more intrusive, Im gonna give Trillian a look sooner or later.

I use both MSN and ICQ with my Trillian interface. These are the advantages I've noticed and remember:

MSN: saves your contacts remotely. easier to change your nick to suit your mood.
ICQ: allows resuming during file tranfers. lets you type even if the other party isn't connected.
