Well of course most eras are going to seem like clones to the original. They're only a few decades apart at most. The only major changes affect the government or the main characters; everything else is business as usual.

That's why I like the NJO era: the uncertainty, the way the galaxy is changing, and it's not too bad if you stick to the Outer Rim. Kind of a shame the EU wants to ignore the entire point of NJO.

What is the point of the NJO? I thought it was just a poor attempt to a) introduce new villians powered by pure suck and b) tie up the loose ends of the previous suck novels. Is there some kind of overarcing narrative I've missed?

It's one of those "status quo will be forever changed" things. You know, like when they have some massive event in comic books that says "nothing will ever be the same", and then they quietly forget that it ever happened? That's NJO in a nutshell.

The OT and the EU up untill the first Tim Zahn books. Little else in the EU has captured the feeling I got when watching the OT as a child.

Prequel era does it for me, especially the Clone Wars.

I just love the idea of a massive war involving hundreds of thousands of ships, trillions, even quintillions of troops, the razing of entire populations- billions dying in a day, the galaxy aflame. Larger than life heroes with mystical powers leading legions of fearless soldiers into battle against artificial armies headed up by a monstrous, marauding, metallic general.

Ooooooh yeah.
