Over the years since the main stardestroyer.net website first went on-line, numerous people have attempted to do numerous calculations involving iron and high temperatures. Unfortunately, they have had to do so largely using sketchy and very incomplete material data taken from websites and textbooks meant for other subjects.
So, for the sake of convenience, I present much more detailed information about iron than we have used before. May you find some use for it, or may you at least be impressed by the amount of work scientific researchers have obviously done in carefully compiling this data. Sources are listed.

Keep in mind that this page is not yet for general public viewing, hence it looks fairly unfinished.

Nitpick: some of the stats for Carbon are missing. Also, a more precise percentage-wise breakdown of Basalt would be nice.

Oops, I forgot to add the carbon data. As for basalt, you can't really get a precise breakdown because it varies. Basalt from one continent might be considerably different than basalt from another continent. That's the problem with rocks, as opposed to pure substances. But silicon dioxide is definitely the biggest single constituent.Lord Zentei wrote:Nitpick: some of the stats for Carbon are missing. Perhaps a very brief mention of the main variants (Tholeiitic, Olivine, High alumina, Alkaline and Lunar)? Just to get an approximate sense of what ratio of the three main ingredients is plausible, as opposed to a precise recipe or anything like that.Darth Wong wrote:Oops, I forgot to add the carbon data. As for instance:
"High alumina basalt has more than 17% alumina (Al2O3)"
"High titanium Lunar basalt has 9-13% TiO2, Low titanium Lunar lavas have 1-5% TiO2."
Or something. I don't know if it would be really crucial for Sci-Fi analysis, though.

For most sci-fi applications, I'd think you'd be the most interested in olivine, given that it's the most "primitive" form and is found pretty much everywhere (asteroids, Mars, etc, etc, etc) where other processes aren't busy weathering it into something else.Lord Zentei wrote:Perhaps a very brief mention of the main variants (Tholeiitic, Olivine, High alumina, Alkaline and Lunar)?
