Flash troubles

Post by Praxis »

Okay, so I've been lazy and haven't installed Flash 8. A Macromedia taskbar icon was there telling me an update was out, and I installed it...assumed that gave me Flash 8.

IGN started complaining because the newer videos require Flash 8. Okay, I thought, and followed the download link it gave me, but the Install Now button refused to appear. I even backed out to the main flash page and clicked the link for the install page and got no link. Strangely, it worked in Internet Exploiter, and Flash 8 now works in that.

Right above the download Flash 8 button was a Flash 9 Beta download link. I figured, fine, Flash 8 won't download, I'll just try 9. It worked, and I installed it on FireFox. Now, NO videos show up, not even YouTube flash videos. Nothing that uses flash. Even IGN's main page.

I managed to get the Flash 8 player installation to work from Macromedia's home page instead of the flash site, and now have reinstalled Flash 8 for FireFox. It's still not working.

Any ideas?

Trash all copies of Flash from the Library and reinstall Flash 8?

I had an issue some moons ago where opening a page with any flash content would kill the browser horribly, and that was what I had to do to sort it out.

Where should I look for that? I never paid much attention as to where Flash puts its files.

I just trashed the Flash files from D:\Program Files\Mozilla FireFox\plugins (they said Flash 9 despite me having reinstalled 8 ) then reinstalled (now they say 8 ).

Ah, I didn't mention, this is on my PC while booted in Windows XP Home SP1, not my Mac or Linux PC.

See, I just assumed you weren't that silly...

But Firefox should be using its own versions of the plugin files (whereas on OSX it uses the central ones from Library/Internet Plug-Ins), you may need to go playing in the registry if it still doesn't work.
